Unhappy seeking advice - 8 yr old child w high thyroxin

My 8 yr old has high levels of (I guess it is) thyroxin and is being treated with methimazole. She also has a goiter, which is how we knew there was a problem and had her thyroid checked. I don't know much about high levels. my questions:

anyone else with a child with thyroid issues?

what should we be looking for in symptoms between "levels check" doctor's appointments?

won't this be a major problem when she hits puberty?

Thank you all for taking the time to answer our questions. I'm pretty worried.

Re: seeking advice - 8 yr old child w high thyroxin

I'm sorry she's dealing with this at such a young age. I can imagine you must be worried. (hugs to the both of you) I hope she is not having too many symptoms...

I assume she was diagnosed Graves?
The methimazole (an antithyroid medication) will bring down her levels. It's possible to achieve remission on antithyroid drugs.
Important is that her levels don't drop too low which would cause hypo and give accompanying symptoms but also this will increase the antibody production, which is to be avoided.

what to look for in symptoms, I do think it's important to keep track of any new occurring symptom. other then that as mentioned, pay attention to hypo symptoms too.

Times such as puberty, pregnancy, in short which involve major hormone changes might have a higher risk for a relapse, but not necessary. So as such this does not have to be a problem.

hope she gets to feel better soon!
