Normal TSH, but LOW Free T4 - Please explain?

I am 16, male, 6'3, 170 pounds. I recently was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I used to weigh 150, but in just 2 months I piled on 20 pounds. My test results came back, and this is what they were
    Results:
    TSH - 1.06
    Free T4 - 0.59

I was prescribed Levothyroxine, 25 mcg. I wanted to know how bad my thyroid is, and what these results mean, maybe even the cause of it, and will the medication they prescribed help me lose the weight I gained? I barely eat as it is, too. Like only 1000 cals a day.

    Jacob,

Can you post the ranges your lab used? Also, what were the symptoms that lead to the test? It would be helpful.

    thanks,

I am Hypothyroid. Your numbers aren't way off. I'd bet the dosage will get you close the "range" but will may not be enough. Your doc is being conservative.

Will it help you get rid of the weight? I don't know. I did help me get up off the couch and get some exercise. I would also recommend you get your testosterone checked. It seems that a lot of the males have that issue as well. I do. Addressing the low-T has helped me a lot with the tiredness. Just a thought. I am still learning as I have only been dealing with this for 4 months. There are some very knowledgeable people on this board that help a lot. Remember to be patient because it takes your body about 6-8 weeks to get used to the new hormone levels.
    Best wishes,

TSH is 'normal' yet, Free T4 is likely low. That looks more like secondary hypothyroidism (pituitary related). You should have a more extensive workup before being put on meds. If you are not seeing an endocrinologist, you should get a referral.
