    Levothyroxine & Long menstrual periods

hello there! I have hypothyroidism and my endocrinologist put me on the lowest dose of Levothyroxine to start me off. Ever since I started though, my periods have been lasting from 3 weeks to a month straight. This is very uncommon for me since I take Depovera (birth control shot) and it makes my periods either stop or be VERY light. Now they are heavy, with painful cramps and last so long! I will be seeing my endocrinologist at the end of this week so I hope all my questions will be answered. Until then, have any of you experienced longer periods since taking levothyroxine? If so, what did your endocrinologist say and do about it?

Re: Levothyroxine & Long menstrual periods

I started taking levothyroxine only after a TT (since I was hyper) Since then, I have experienced heavy and prolonged bleeding, resulting in extremely low iron. My endo suggested I go on the pill (it's been two months and surprisingly no improvement. I still bleed almost every day but not as heavily). I got a transvaginal ultrasound and there were no problems. I'm going to a gynecologist next month to discuss it. I'm 38, so it shouldn't be menopause.

Wish I could help you specifically. It's interesting to read about someone else having problems with their menstrual cycle after taking this med.

Re: Levothyroxine & Long menstrual periods

Thanks so much for your reply! It's a big concern of mine because I've always had issues with my iron due to my periods which is wht I was put on birth control shot to make my periods go away. Since then I have not been anemic, but I'm almost certain I am again because of bleeding every single day. I figure my endocrinologist might do the same, by putting me on another medicine to stop the bleeding. I'm just so tired of all these different medications so I don't want any added to my list because I'm only 17 years old! I'm hoping though when they increase my dosage next visit that maybe it will stop my prolonged periods and go back to how it was before. Im so sorry to hear the medication has yet to work for you! I will definitely keep you updated on what I hear from my endocrinologist this upcoming appointment.
