New and Nervous about thyroid test results

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid about 6 months ago and put on synthroid which has started to to bring the number down. I just got back my recent lab tests and my thyroglobulin ab is very elevated at 1074.0 and my thyroglobulin is low at 0.62. I am very confused as to hat this means. I would so appreciate any help understanding this I am so nervous. Thank You

Hi, lulurandy Posting the normal ranges for your lab values is usually helpful but think I can answer your questions without them.

The high thyroglobulin AB level means your hypothyroidism is probably autoimmune related. Your body is attacking your thyroid. Most cases of hypothyroidiosm in the US are autoimmune related. Since you're already diagnosed as hypothyroid it won't have any effect on your treatment which is thyroid hormone replacement.

Thyroglobulin AB isn't usually the go to antibody test as TPO antibodies are more often the ones looked for and the one that are more often to be found. The meaning of the presence of either antibody is the same and points to an autoimmune origin of the disease. I wouldn't worry about it even if the number seems very high because it really has no significance to the severity of your hypothyroidism, how you feel, or respond to treatment.

I'm stumped by why a thyroglobulin level was ordered. Maybe someone else will know why it was drawn. It isn't diagnostic or very useful in your case as you've explained it so far. It's sometimes used as a post surgical tumor marker after thyroid cancer surgery and that's about it to the best of my knowledge. If the thyroid is removed, the level should be zero since there is no thyroid left to produce it. In those patients, any amount present can mean the cancer has spread. But that said, low levels can be found in people with no thyroid disease and even if elevated it's not an indicator of cancer as long as you still have your thyroid. If no one here can give you a better answer, I'd ask your doctor why it was drawn and what it means and why he ordered it for you. But I honestly don't think it's worth worrying about.
