TMJ Phase II at regular Orthodontist?

    Hello,

I got my TMJ phase I splint treatment done 2 years ago (Michigan, USA) from a TMJ specialist dentist. I am wearing the splint every night. I need to go for Phase II as the phase 1 created bite issues so my molar teeth are not touching and i have problems eating. The TMJ specalist i got my Phase I done with had noted that the Phase II will cost $8,500 to $10,000 and i have to pay everything out of pocket (he does not participate in dental networks).

Recently i got a consultation from regular orthodontist. He asked about my dental history, did a brief examination and told me that he can do braces for me to fix the bite, while accomodating the retainer i have to wear during the night. When i inquired whether there would be any special consideration for TMJ, he said there should not be as my Jaw position is now stable. With him after the dental insurance coverage, my cost would be about $2500 to $3000.

That is a big difference in cost. The one thing i am unclear about is whether the Phase II TMJ treatment a regular orthodontic treatment, or is there some TMJ specific things involved that could only be done by a specialist.

I dont want to screw up and make my TMJ worse. I could go back to my TMJ specialist for braces, but the cost for is so high compared to the other orthodontist that i am trying to understand what Phase II involves.

Any recommendations? I have put off my teatment for too long for the same reason. Any help here is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Wish I could help. I chose and chose wrong now I'm suffering more! My bite is now messed up even more with my back teeth hitting now as they did not before and wearing off too. I know this can be fixed with the teeth being built up but it's just so hard finding someone to trust. What did you decide to do?
