Vibrations? and masseter

Does anyone ever feel like their teeth/mouth is vibrating or quivering? This just started a couple of weeks ago and it's not constant. I might go a day or two and not feel anything and the next it might bother me all day. I tried mentioning it to my TMJ doctor but just got a hummm answer before he ran off to get his dietitian to talk to me about magnesium and lavender oil. She said a lot of their TMJ patients have a lot of success with both. Some don't notice a difference.

I think there is something wrong with him healthwise because he gave two weeks notice to his patients and staff that he was retiring in two weeks.

I have been receiving intraoral massage for a few weeks and it helps short term. The right masseter has really been bothering me with pulling so tight that I feel like my face should look deformed. My PT dry needled it on Friday morning and hit a blood vessel. This caused a small knot to form, a big bruise and a lot of swelling.... BUT it's not spasming and pulling so I guess it's a win?

My ears are better, my masseter is better, my neck and shoulders are better but I still have a lot of tightness at the back of my neck and the back of my head. I am taking lavender oil orally to help with anxiety and muscles as well as magnesium. He told me to do a loading dose on the magnesium but that sounded off too so I haven't done that yet. My family doctor agreed to put me on Clonazepam full time for the anxiety that is causing the muscle tension. I've tried every anxiety med out there and have side effects to all of them. Clonazepam works to relax my neck muscles without side effects. I'm supposed to take it twice a day but I've been taking it once in the morning and replacing the afternoon dose with the lavender instead. They don't like to prescribe benzos full time due to the extra paperwork and government scrutiny but he knows what I'm going through and I've been with him long enough he knows I'm not a drug seeker and I don't have addiction issues.

I start allergy shots next week for my ears. The ear expert and allergist worked together to come up with a plan. Apparently my ear issues are being caused by allergies and TMJ. My TMJ is most likely being caused by muscle tension from anxiety. So we are tackling all of those issues.

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Hi Sally,

I sometimes have that feeling of quivering too. It is a very strange feeling. It all has to do with your muscles spasming and being unhappy that your jaw does not have a good resting place.

I am in PT like you, and also am going through intra-oral work as well as dry needling. Take things slow, it certainly sounds like you are making progress- that is a wonderful thing no matter how slight. : )

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

The right masseter muscle was driving me crazy today. My face looked normal in the mirror but I felt like it should be puffy and deformed.
The clonazepam and Lavela seem to be helping quite a bit.

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

I am getting a crown tomorrow so I will need my splint rebalanced as soon as possible. I filed the exception with insurance yesterday and they said it would take 3-5 days to make a determination.
I had a referral to the orofacial pain clinic at the UofL dental school but I've been waiting 5 weeks and they still haven't set up anything.

I keep having the jaw tremors and now I'm having left sided tremors in my lower arm and hand. In the mornings my entire body feels like it's shaking or vibrating internally. I don't know if this is TMJ related or if there is something neurological going on.

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Good Morning Sally,

Those tremors sound like muscle spasms... I get them sometimes in my arms also. Our muscles are just all torked and overworked so when we use them they get tired easily.

I hope the crown procedure goes well for you. I wonder if you will be able to continue wearing your current splint once the crown is put on?

I have been in her repositioning splint for about 6 months now. I have seen some improvements. As you know most of my issues are muscular in nature and I have terrible neck spasms and pain. I have the same neck pain but my jaw pain has lessened and my opening has improved.. from 23mm to now 35mm. I am also doing PT with a great therapist.

Her treatment as with most tmj therapy is very expensive. I believe I paid 3600 bucks in total for my splint and eval. MY insurance did not cover this as they consider splint treatment for tmj as experimental and not reliable.

Are you still doing PT with your therapist?

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Yes, I still go to PT twice per week but after this week it will be cut down to once per week. My insurance covers 50 visits per year so I have to cut back since I am getting close.

Taking Klonopin on a daily basis is what has really turned around my neck pain. It's still stiff but not painful (usually). Unfortunately, the muslces causing the problems are just above my hair line where they can't really be helped by stretching and the PT can't dry needle them due to their location to the spine. I can't use a tens unit because the pads won't stick through my hair.

My right masseter is what usually gives me problems but this week it's been perfectly fine and a little muscle below it has a nice size knot that won't go away! I've pinched and poked at it and my PT has tried. Today it's calm but if it's acting up tomorrow I'm going to ask her to needle it.

I got the crown today. About 4 hours after leaving the dentist the numbing medication wore off and oh my gosh I was in pain! They told me I would be a little sore but this was a give me morphine type pain so I called and they told me to come right in. They had to adjust how it was sitting and did some grinding on the top because I could feel it when I bit down. I still don't think it's quite right (too tall on one corner) but it did stop hurting.

I haven't put in my splint yet. I've been dreading trying. If it's off I'm afraid it will aggravate my masseter again. The last time it was off just a little my masseter went crazy but after they balanced the splint it calmed down.

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Sally- Good Morning! I hope you're feeling a little better today. Perhaps it might be best to leave the splint out until you see your doctor. I have never had any major dental work aside from some small cavities but I do have fears of needing more major dental work with this jaw of mine. ugh.

I am glad your neck pain has gotten better! I am hoping some day soon mine will be also. Can't believe i have been fighting this flare up for over a year. I'm just trying so hard to be patient and kind to myself. It is hard on those bad days tho. I have been trying Lyrica and I think it is helping me a little bit. : )

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

I had about 3 near perfect days. The vice grip on the back of my neck wasn't really bothering me, my ears were barely acting up, nojaw vibrations, no hand/arm tremors. I knew it wouldn't last.
Today has been awful. My right side muscle is tight and pulling so my right ear is pulling and clicking. Plus I have the sinus running behind my nose. That has been so much better and today it's back.
The splint seemed to fit but I'm going to leave it out tonight and see how I feel tomorrow.
I had to cancel my appointment for today because my insurance is taking their time approving my out of network exception.

Are you able to work? I was hired today to do event work downtown at the stadium, convention center and track. I can pick and choose which events I want to work so I can work around how I am feeling.

I saw a naturopathic doctor last week. I take a lot of ibuprofen for inflammation. She wants me off the ibuprofen and gave me several reasons why it's so bad for you. She's having me take curcumin instead. She also added extra vitamin C (my multi vitamin has some) and said it is beneficial for allergies and inflammation. So we shall see!

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Do you remember how much your first visit cost? They said she would need to do a full exam herself even though I have all of my paperwork from my other doctor. They said that would include xrays and I can't remember what else.

I am in pain and am about ready to just pay out of pocket and hope my insurance approves the out of network exception and reimburses me.

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Hey Sally!

Great to hear about your new job. It sounds flexible so that is great news. : )

I do currently work full time. It is difficult most days but also rewarding and it keeps me occupied so I am not always thinking of my jaw and neck problems.

May I ask how much ibuprofen you were taking? Did it seem to help? I don't take any because I don't notice a significant improvement after I take it... unless I have a major headache. It doesn't do crap for my neck pain and tension.

I believe the initial exam was around 500 dollars, and then if you pursue treatment they apply that 500 to your total treatment cost- which I believe was $3600. If you are hurting that bad you need to be under treatment with someone.. I would get into a consult with her ASAP. They have a payment plan so you can pay in installments if you need to. Does your insurance cover tmj treatment? If they do, you are very lucky. I have never heard of an out of network exception...

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

Yes they do cover out of network. The visits have a $40 copay and appliances cost 30 or 40% of the total.

I am taking 800 mg of ibuprofen. I don’t know it’s a coincidence or not but the day I started taking it my neck stopped hurting completely. Now I’m afraid to stop to see if it comes back! The pain in my neck was high up just above my hairline where you can’t stretch or needle it.

I don’t like taking it because it’s not good for the body. My naturopath gave me CuraPro and said that should replace ibuprofen. So after taking it a while I will stop the ibuprofen.

It definitely helps to keep busy but sometimes it’s hard to focus.

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

The muscle pain in your neck sounds like it is in your suboccipital muscles... and you can massage those... put two tennis balls in a sock and then close the end off with a rubber band... then place those on the base of your skull while you lay on the floor with them positioned there... gravity and the weight of your head will allow the tennis balls to loosen those muscles.you may even want to move your head side to side (very slowly) to apply the pressure to different areas of your neck. This works as deep trigger point work. Lots of people use this method for back pain too.

So the curapro is a brand of turmeric (curcumin)? Can you tell a difference when taking it? I need to give that a try... I also plan to start trying magnesium again.

If the Ibuprofen is helping you.. I would continue to take it. So happy it helps you! Some people don't have luck with it while others do. Perhaps try and lower your dose now that you have the supplement to aid in your anti-inflammatory needs? Oh! and always try and take ibuprofen with food- bread or something like that to try and avoid stomach upset. I also read that the liquid gels are easier on the stomach so you may want to switch to those as opposed to the solid form. How many times of day do you take it?

Your insurance is wonderful! I am so jealous! Are there any other tmj specialists in KY that you can go see? It sure is an expensive disorder.. so frustrating.

Thanks for chatting with me!

Indy

Re: Vibrations? and masseter

I haven't tried the tennis balls.

I have gallstones (surgery scheduled next month) and for some reason I can't remember you aren't supposed to take tumeric with gallstones It has a pretty high dose of curcumin and the naturopath thinks I should be able to get off the ibuprofen. I had problems with plantar fasciitis a few years ago and my family doctor prescribed Ibuprofen 800 mg so I just had to take one pill. I took it every day for years! they kept renewing it and never mentioned it might be bad for me. I stopped taking it over a year ago but just started again. I do plan to cut back and see if 600 mg. helps and then back to 400 mg. and 200mg. It might not be the ibuprofen helping. Maybe my neck just got tired of driving me crazy for 7 straight months! I take the ibuprofen every 8 hours so twice per day.

My ENT (awesome guy and the only doctor that didn't think I was crazy with my odd ear symptoms) is the one that suspected TMJ. I called him and they are trying to get me an appointment at the a pain clinic . I hope I can get in there faster than March!

The TMJ doctor in Louisville gave me magnesium and lavender pills at my last visit. He had his nutritionist come in and talk to me about the magnesium and what she told me sounded crazy so I haven't tried it. They explained the procedure for magnesium loading.

The muscle on the right side is driving me crazy. It seems be lower than the masseter but I can't quite figure out what it is. It's about an inch to the right of my lips and goes all the way down to my jawline. Pinching it seems to help but I can't walk around all day holding it that way! The spot seems to be about the size of a quarter.

What exercises do they have you doing at PT other than manual therapy or needling? They have me doing an arm bike, wall lift offs, chin tuck snow angels, 2 exercises on bands, resting on my back on a big pool noodle, I'sY'sT's with 3 lbs. weights and 10 lbs. weights for prone rolls plus lifting the weights straight up and down 30 times while on my back. I do the exercises for 45 min. and get 15 min. of manual. I would prefer to have more manual especially now that my neck and shoulders aren't hurting! When I first started months ago my ears were stuck up to my neck and my upper back/neck were on fire. Some days it felt like I had a blow torch on them and the muscles would contract so much it felt like worms crawling all over. All of that is gone now thank God! and hopefully it won't come back!

It's nice to have someone somewhat local to talk to! None of my friends/family have any idea what I am going through and seems to think I'm just crazy or too sensitive.
