Botox Injections

Hi

Has anyone received Botox injections for tmj .
If yes what has been your experience? Does it take the pain away . What are the success rates

I grind my teeth clench. I use night guard But pain came back. I am thinking about asking my md about thus he did mention this but wants to try new guard first .

I tried searching other posts but they were from many years ago

Thank you in advance for reading my post or responding

Re: Botox Injections

I'm interested to know this question also. My doctor spoke to me about it once, saying if all other treatments fail, also said that it really dont last long and is very expensive. I have read mixed reviews on internet about benefits vs risk. I dont think I would consider it a option. They say at this point my problem is more muscle then joint. Ive only been dealing with it for 4months now and learning as I go. Hopefully someone with more knowledge could answer.

Re: Botox Injections

I decided to join this health boards as I have been pain free since November 2016. I was suffering for about 15 years from TMJ Pain. Levels of pain were so high, I was taking every tablet given to me for the pain!! In the end before getting Botox I was taking a huge amount of Valium to try and relax the muscles in my jaw/head/neck. I remember most days throwing up from the severe pain. I still wear my TMJ brace now, but I am honestly telling you that I have not had 1 single episode since getting botox. I have botox injected into a few area of my temporalis muscle. I have had it done 3 times since October 2016. I will never look back!!!

Ruth.

Re: Botox Injections

Hi there, after my first injections, I had it done again 7 months later and again 6 months later. I clenched my teeth so bad every night, I remember my brother once saying he passed my bedroom door and could hear me clenching it was so bad. For some reason I only got severe pain on one side of my face(left). I never once got pain on my right side. I went to ever dentist/tmj specialist. It was only in the end my TMJ specialist referred me to a pain specialist at a private clinic. I get an injection of botox just by my temple, one just in front of my ear near the cheek bone and about 3 more in the left side of my head. In my opinion my muscles were just so overactive from clenching ever night, I needed something to relax the muscles which botox did. I had so much pain for a long time, it got extremely bad in 2016, I was out of work for a month, crying with pain. I have had no negatives with this treatment. Chewing perfect, no change in my face!! Just pain free!! Happy to answer anymore questions. Thanks. One more thing when I went for more injections after the first time I didn't feel I needed more but was just terrified that the pain might come back, overtime you will need to get it done less, one a year even.

can you tell me about what tmj brace is and how you use it? for your tmj pain, do you have pain 24/7 or at certain times?

Re: Botox Injections

To be honest I think the TMJ Brace does nothing for pain! I protects the teeth for wearing down from grinding. I wear it every night in bed, I haven't been wearing it every night since I got botox injections. Maybe on some level it lessons the grinding but I am not 100% sure about that in my case. I was in moderate pain daily but severe pain every couple of weeks. The pain was so intense down one side of my face and head, really bad around my eye and temple and cheek bone. I would lie down for hours trying heat and cold, valium would calm it down a bit, but I did not want to have to take valium for the rest of my life! It can be very addictive. Botox really did work for me.
