    TMJ question

    Hi there
My problem started 8 weeks ago as an ear infection which went.
I had crackling when chewing , tinnitus , and ear pain pressure.
The symptoms I am left with is a strange dull / ear ache which never goes.
I went to see ENT specialist he told me I have TMJ.
Does TMJ cause this kind of odd sensation in the ear?

    Re: TMJ question

My TMJD presented as ear problems: stuffiness, then pain like a constant ear infection, then the intermittent tinnitus.

It took me about a year to figure out it was my jaw. In layman's terms, the jaw and ear are about 3 mm apart. If the jaw is off, the muscles around the jaw stay in constant spasm trying to hold the jaw into place. For me, my symptoms of this were in my ears. It took me a while, multiple false tries, to find a dentist with good training in TMJD and about 3 months into treatment with him to get my ear to 'pop' and the pain to diminish.

In addition to the bite issues, if you can find a good PT who will do manual TMJ work, trigger point releases, small muscle exercises, it will help immensely. I also found dry needling to be extremely helpful.

You do need to address both the physical bite issues and the muscles spasms together for long-term relief if your problems are bad.
