    Nerve issues associated with TMJ/TMD?

    Hi all,

I am currently in week 6 of TMJ treatment (wearing a bottom oral appliance to reposition my jaw). I have been struggling with swallowing difficulties, ear pain/congestion, constant popping and crackling sounds with jaw joint movement, numbness tingling in my left hand and feet. The most recent symptoms include strange facial numbing and tingling, sense of blockage in my nose. Has anyone experienced this? My TMJ specialist doesn't know what all of the facial symptoms are about. She suspected trigeminal nerve was impacted but I got an MRI done and cranial nerves are fine. I still feel like something is going on with the trigeminal nerve but maybe not showing up in the MRI. I'm unclear what this is all about and its causing me great anxiety and really interfering with my quality of life. I'm wondering if its just part of jaw realignment--hopefully it will go away. Any advice, recommendations or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

    Dear meganmcc,

I would get an opinion of a regular doctor just to rule out anything else.

    Hi Yaya,

Thanks for your response. However, my regular doc, 4 ENT's and a neurologist have all examined me and are unsure of what these symptoms are related to.

I have the same issue, and Iíve also had it ruled out by an MRI. I had tons of blood tests too and all was clear. Itís driving me nuts.

Re: Nerve issues associated with TMJ/TMD?

I've been having a very similar issue with the numbness and nerve pain. I thought it was just me! I get sharp nerve pain in my upper teeth on the left side, pain in the cheek, my nose and I actually have burning in my left sinus/nostril.

Before I realized I had TMJ I went repeatedly to the doc thinking I had a sinus infection, an ENT did an endoscopy. This happens if I eat anything solid, so I know it has to do with my jaw.

I have no answer yet, sorry I cannot help. I'm curious if you are still experiencing this.

Re: Nerve issues associated with TMJ/TMD?

Thanks so much for responding SoSayWeAll and Ctjackson. It helps to know that others are experiencing this as well.

My nose is slightly better after wearing the appliance for almost 3 months. I still have the numbing/tingling in my face and now tingling on my head/scalp area. Its beyond frustrating. I feel like my quality of life has significantly reduced. Still have the ear stuffiness/itchiness/pain and cracking/crunching noises in my jaw. My range of motion, swallowing and nose sensations have improved. However, I still have intermittent swallowing and nose problems ....

I'm working with a chiropractor as well -- this has helped my posture a bit. My TMJ specialist thinks there is pressure/hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and trigeminal nerve. I think fewer people experience these neurological symptoms and maybe just takes more time to get relief. I don't know.

My TMJ specialist will scan everything again in about a month to determine what's improved. If I'm still expericing the nerve issues, then he will put me on neuropathic pain meds (e.g. gabapentin).

ENT did a turbinate reduction to help my nasal breathing but I'm not sure how much that helped. Might just be more strange sensations that are neurological in nature.

Ctjackson--any answers or relief for you?

I hope you will both keep me posted and I will do the same.

Re: Nerve issues associated with TMJ/TMD?

Glad to hear you're having some relief, hope it continues. It is VERY frustrating! At least two doctors didn't really know if my newly diagnosed cervical arthritis/bad posture was aggravating my jaw. But I find all over the internet that they are very much connected.

I've been on pureed and liquid food for FIVE months and before that on soft diet for 3 months. Fed up, today I discovered some physical therapy exercises that I'm hoping will help.

I'll keep checking on your progress.
