    TMJ Advice/Help/Info ...

    Hi everyone!
I've been having symptoms of TMJ since I was about 12, and properly diagnosed when I was 14. Now I'm 26 and I still experience issues with it. But it's been so long since I've seen a specialist, and at 14 I didn't know what questions to ask or anything so here I am!

I was wondering if anyone on here can describe to me in depth what TMJ is, like if you were to describe it to someone who has never heard of it before. I have a wicked hard time doing that because I don't know fully either. When I read articles online they're either medical essays or all in terms that mostly overwhelm me.
I was also wondering what long lasting effects can develop. I have been ignoring and neglecting this for a very long time and now that I'm getting older I'm expecting to have the day where I won't be able to function for whatever reason.
Has anyone had insurance issues?? When I saw someone once upon a time, my dad worked real hard to have the one insurance that did cover it but he ended up not being able to keep the job, so I had to stop treatment. Are there any loopholes or anything I can get around? Is there still a battle between dental and medical??

I really want to start looking into treatment again sometime in the future but I'm mostly blind leading into it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! I hope all is well in the world for everyone!!!!

Do a simple search on TemporoMandibular Joint Disorder and you'll find a lot of information.

There's also a pinned thread at the top of this page by "Marlene" that describes the symptoms of TMJD.

Many insurances will cover it as long as it's billed under Myofascial Pain Dysfunction which is a medical condition.

See an oral surgeon as TMJ does not ever go away without treatment. My brother had successful surgery under an oral surgeon's hands and no longer suffers with symptoms of clicking, jaw issues and swallowing problems.

My child had a serious case of TMJD at a young age. All the surgeons wanted to "cut" as that's what they do. I found a conservative specialist and he was treated and is well now.

As for TMJD never going away, that's "somewhat" true, but it can be managed. I've managed with it well it for decades with no treatment. It depends on the severity of a case and everyone is different.
