    Unhappy Suffering from TMJD

I had braces at age 13 and everything apparently went well until, sometime in the 90’s, I suffered from jaw pain and was put in braces again for a malocclusion (my bite was off). I suffered terribly with the new braces and bands and had to stop treatment immediately. The braces were taken off and my dentist did cosmetic treatment to correct my bite. I WAS A NEW PERSON.

January of 2002, my dentist replaced my old veneers with new ones for a better look. Stress increased in my life at the time and I began to have all of the following symptoms: tight neck muscles causing numbness down my right arm and up to my right ear; headaches as if a vice grip was pressing on my head/neck/jaw/ears; terrible pressure and pain in my ears along with tinnitus—ringing in my ears…I felt as if someone was twisting screw-drivers deep within both ears; horrible vertigo/dizziness; insomnia—inability to sleep; and I became anxious and couldn’t sit still with my heart racing constantly. I cannot prove that it is the new teeth but I was pain and symptom free, for years, prior.

After 4 days of not being able to get out of bed I was forced to see many specialists to rule out brain tumors, ear disorders, thyroid problems, lymes disease, etc. I had x-rays, MRI’s, blood tests, ear tests, nerve tests….you name it!

I discovered I was suffering with TMJD, a herniated disc in my neck (C5-C6), with tension headaches and anxiety disorder.

For the TMJD I was given a hard lower guard to wear at all times except while eating and put on a soft diet and sent to a physical therapist who specialized in TMJD. For the herniated disc in my neck I was sent to the same physical therapist which specialized in TMJD as well as the neck. The physical therapist strongly believes that neck and jaw problems are related. As far as medications, I couldn’t take anything with aspirin or ibuprofen due to anaphylactic shock. I was given muscle relaxant medication but it would make me even more dizzy. For the tension headaches, insomnia and anxieties…I was put on anti-anxiety medication and sent to a psychologist for stress management. After a few months…ALL MY SYMPTOMS WERE GONE….I WAS ME AGAIN!

Eleven months of feeling great, I asked my doctor if I can wean off of the anti-anxiety medication and after 1 month…ALL MY SYMPTOMS ARE BACK!

I just started back on the anti-anxiety medication and I can’t wait for the meds to kick in again. Also my ENT doctor put me on a diuretic to reduce fluids/pressure in my ears. Due to my aspirin allergy of going into anaphylactic shock, my allergist gave me an anti-inflammatory medication that is like aspirin but only 1% of people who have aspirin allergies are allergic to, and I found it does help.

I hope there are others out there who have experienced what I’m going through as I feel like I’m the only one in the world with this discomfort. Also, I’m in search of a new TMJD specialist as my previous specialist is no longer treating for TMJD due to the issues with malpractice insurance in Pennsylvania.

I’m 36 years old and want my life back as the pain/pressure/anxiety and dizziness makes you want to throw in the towel….BUT I HAVE FAITH I’LL BE ME AGAIN!
