Oral Habits and tmj, tongue thrust etc
Hi there,
I have been told I have a tongue thrust problem, and that the pressure of my tongue being in the wrong position in my mouth, had probably enhanced pressure on my joints.
Ive always had a slight lisp, and have continued from a young age to swish liquid around in my mouth before I swallowed. But I do remember before I was given a splint for TMJ, that I all of a sudden felt like my tongue was too large for my mouth, and it never felt relaxed.
Then my jaw locked, and the pain started, and I was given a splint for 3 months (that was never monitored) After wearing it for one month, I developed an open bite, that was over year and half ago, the bite had never closed. And I still have this problem with my tongue always feeling tense and out of place in my mouth, and it now sits through the gap, between my top and bottom teeth.
I spoke to my Orthodontist about this, as I have been told, that if oral habits are not corrected, braces, splints etc, will never work.
He completely dismissed this idea.
Anyone had people talking to them about oral habits
Regards
xxxxxxxxxx
