Smile Muscle tremors in shoulder due to TMJ?

Hi all. As some of you already know, I've been undergoing upper splint therapy 24/7 for the past couple months for my TMD. When I first started wearing the splint I could actually feel the muscles in my face right around the joints tremoring/fluttering all day long. The ortho said that was due to my jaw's attempts at realignment from the splint and also the muscles beginning to relax.

Now in the last 2 days, I've noticed that same sensation around/under my left shoulder blade. It occurrs for 10-15 seconds at a time, and occurs several times throughout the day, even if I'm just sitting around watching TV or reading. Is this due to the TMJ or splint therapy? Has anyone else had this sensation of tremoring/fluttering? It's kind of unnerving, but not painful, just weird.

I also have fibromyalgia (which may be helped by curing my TMJ problems), but have never noticed the muscle tremoring like this from fibro. It's just kinda weird feeling, and different for me, so am wondering if others have noticed muscle tremors in various body parts from splint therapy.

    Katie,

TMJD can cause muscle problems, but it does seem to be more of a constant source of tight or spasming muscles. I've had upper body muscle problems for years and diagnosed with Fibro by different Doctors several times through the years. I was never sure if it was a true Fibromyalgia or the TMJ problems. I seemed to have flares, which I'm told is considered Fibro, too.

I did get the muscle problems under control except the facial muscles with massage therapy. Splint therapy has done away with the majority of the rest.

Everyone is different in how their muscles respond to treatment and how they respond to splint therapy.

I did a lot of research on Fibro and TMJD and the connection, if you have both.
I think it would be hard to know which is responsible for this new symtom. I believe it would be more related to the Fibro, but possibly the Fibro responding to your treatment.

I've had some tremors in my arms and a feeling of weakness. It went away, once the muscle spasms were under control. I think this may be considered one of those vicious cycles, where one problem is contributing or affecting the other and vice-versa.

I never really figured out if I had Fibro. I did manage to get most all of the spasms and other symtoms stopped with massage and splint therapy.
Hopefully, you're on your way. If this symtom continues, I think I would ask, just for peace of mind.

    Hi Katie

It sounds like the splint is loosening up those tight
    muscles.
    Good Luck

Hi gals. Thanks for your input. I'm hoping it's due to splint therapy unknotting years & years of tightness and pain. So hard to tell the difference between fibro pain and TMJ pain. The tremors just feel so weird, and my fibro pain levels (especially low back and thumb joints) have increased this week due to the extremely cold weather we're having here in Michigan, and the tremors started then too.

Keep me posted on your TMJ progress and I'll keep you posted on mine.

    Hi again

Give it time, you might experience some more pain until everything starts
    to loosen up

    Good Luck
    again

I have problems with my feet and calves tremors. It drives me nuts. Sometimes I have a feeling of cold water running through my head or brain d,don't know which one. I know this sounds crazy but that's the best way i can explain it. Does anyone else have any of these symptoms. Thanks gerber.

    Hi, there,
I get a tremor, twitching thing in my muscles or nerves on the left side of my face, not painful same as you, but highly annoying, like a shakiness.

    Hi Lucy

Definitely something that tmj does to the muscles as it is trying to realign
the jaw the muscles in the body kind of align themselves just like going to a chiropractors but this is a natural response to the muscles/joints/ligaments/in the tmj area.
When everything relaxes and calms down the jaw will not be as tense therefore muscle tremors should be reduced in other areas of the body also.
This is the bodies natural response to the malalignment and it tries to balance
itself out and compensate for muscles that are in spasm kind of like a chain reaction whereas all the other muscles in the body try to compensate therefore twitching takes place.

Angry Re: Muscle tremors in shoulder due to TMJ?

Thanks for your reply pinky, it makes me feel alot better. The other question i have is , how come the more i smoke cigarettes the tighter my muscles in my calves become, they get harder than rock. I know i should quit smoking but tmj is very stressful.

I quit last year, but I think that it probably gets tighter due to the fact that cig smoking
actually doesn't calm you but makes you more tense, therefore increasing the muscle
tension in your calf muscles. I get the same thing. are you getting tmj treatment?

If you have TMJ it could easily be related to that. I have extreme muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders and they even go down my back and it's not fibro for me. It's caused by the pain in my jaw which has spasmed up.

No, I am not getting tmj treatment. I've been to a specialist and he told me I would hav't to have surgery to see what's going on. I've had tmj the past 8 years. I refuse to have surgery I;ve heard to many horror stories on that, nor do I have the money for it. I do use my splint I don't bite down like I used to, The one thing that has helped me most is coral calcium Physcian formulated, the other kinds did not help as well. I do any kind of stretching except my jaw. I can't chew any food at all, not even a pea. It will Aggravate it if I do. No doctors have really helped me I have helped myself more than they have. I still believe coral calcium has been a miracle for me.
I still have tmj but not as half as bad as it used to be. Thanks for listening !
