Could this be TMJ? Neck pain and Headaches!

    Hello,

Firstly, I have been plauged with awful neck pain for the past seven years with no let-up of symptoms despite trying almost everything. Most of the pain is centred around the left side of my neck but I occasionally get pain around the back and right side of my neck causing tension headaches over the top of my head and resting above the eyes. I also have some tension/discomfort in the jaw muscles.

My dentist once told me years ago that I had a really bad bite and gave me some kind of a bitebreaker to try to sort the problem out but it never worked.

Anyway, I recently had a tooth extracted and since then I have notice that the pain in the left side of my neck almost disappeared but had moved into the right side and I had a constant headache. I tried my usual routine of things to try to relieve it such as massage, exercise, and painkillers - none of them worked which was unusual. Anyway I got to thinking that my jaw felt kind of strange so I put the temporary denture in to see if that made a difference. I instantly started to feel the headache relieve itself - ahha! However, although the headache was going the pain in the left side of my neck came back almost instantaneously. So I experimented by spending time with my denture in and with it out and noticed that the pain in my neck shifted from right to left and vice versa depending on whether I wearing the denture or not.

I spoke with my physiotherapist about this and we agreed that it sounds like I have an uneven bite which could be causing the neck pain. Anyway, I've made an appointment to see the dentist on Monday to talk about it.

Has anybody else ever had a similar experience to this and what options might be open to me in order to correct the misaligned jaw. I'm 30 years old, I'm not sure if that will make any difference to the treatment I receive.

Hi there - could very well be related to TMJ problems, but only a TMJ specialist will be able to tell. Good for you to see your dentist - this is the first step toward getting a referral or the right treatment.

Keep us posted on your progress,
    Katie G

Your experience sounds IDENTICAL to mine! I had two lower wisdom teeth removed, the bottom left was impacted. After surgery, things were fine, but I IMMEDIATLY noticed that I couldn't sleep like I normally did...I had to lay my head a VERY specific way or I wasn't "comfortable". I didn't think much about it then. Since, I started getting headaches, left sided jaw pain, severe neck stifness etc! (Mine doesn't move back and forth! ) I too have found myself at the chiro, getting massages, etc! I know I have TMJ because I can hear the click when I open my mouth! Does yours?!?! Also, ever since I get a small clear bubble above where the wisdom tooth was, from time to time. Apparently my salivary gland was cut during the operation! (which may also be causing the pain) Does anything else relieve your pain?!!?

Surgery is very traumatic to your jaw...were you awake during your procedure?
