Doc says sore throat and TMJ have no connection??

I'm kinda going crazy here, because one symptom I've had from the very beginning I found out I had tmj, was a constant sore throat.

I finally went and saw an oral surgeon and he said he sees at least 10 tmj patients weekly. (So you would think he knew all these symptoms that we talk about on these boards?) He said there was no connection with throat problems and TMJ????

My symptoms are as follows: Fatigue, Ear pressure (with no infection), constant sore throat or feeling that a sore throat is on the way(with no infection), ears pop, constantly clearing my throat, swallowing problems, ears ring sometimes, tension headaches at the back of skull, extreme stiff neck and shoulders, soreness at the point of right jaw, soreness behind and in front of ears.

I've also heard people on these boards say they feel a lump in their throat? Shouldn't the doc know about these symptoms? Is he right that they aren't connected?

Oh, and my xray came back okay. Can your xray come back clean and still have tmj?

Your oral surgeon sounds a bit out of the loop to me. You can definitely get a sore throat, difficulty swallowing ans a lump type sensation in th elower throat, on the same side as you problems.

It's the sternocleidomastoid muscle, (hope I got that one right!), tightening up and you feel the lump where it attaches to the upper rib cage.

    Definitely tmj.

    Good luck.

I'm not sure. They just took an xray with my mouth closed and open. Sorry!

Hi there - have you seen an ENT to rule out sinus problems for the ear and throat complaints? Also, maybe see a GI doc to rule out reflux which can cause a sore throat.

However, all your symptoms can definitely be TMJ related.

    Good luck to you,
    Katie G
