To get a splint or not to get a splint

I've had TMJ for over 11 years, my dentist finally recommended me to get my wisdom tooth out and he said that would help with the clicking my jaw does everytime I open my mouth wide. I was hesitant about this because my clicking of my jaw and at times pain happened prior to me having wisdom teeth. I did end up getting one wisdom tooth pulled and the pain has been much less but the clicking and having to adjust my jaw still is there and still on the rare occasion my jaw still hurts. The specialist mentioned something about getting a splint.... my questions are is the splint the answer and how long would you have to wear it before the jaw would get better. Is this a life time thing? Something I will just have to suffer through? Any answers and helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: To get a splint or not to get a splint

I have had severe tmj for almost 3 years now. My case was a little different than yours I believe. I had to wear a splint for one year 24/7 and I was in alot of pain for about 8 weeks after having a wisdom tooth pulled. When I got my splint I started doing much better and after several months was pain free...and was pain free for about 1 1/2 years. I am dealing with another bout of this....anyway....Has your dentist/specialist xrayed your tmj joint? If not, I would get this done. You need to educate yourself about affects everyone very with mine,,,I have to be careful about what I do physically,,I get back pain and neck pain with mine..I have to have massage therapy as well. I am doing much better now...Back to the splint issue...I had to get one because my bite was off and my tmj joint was displaced. That is what you need to get determined. I highly recommend a splint if that is what you need. Hope I have helped you. Tina
