Question :)

Ok... I know I've had TMJD for a number of years, but a little over a month ago I've been really noticing I've been clenching a lot during the day, and opening my mouth in front of a mirror it's clear my mouth opened toward my left side. So over the last month I've been using my nightguard to avoid clenching/grinding again faithfully, and making mental notes all day not to clench and I have not been clenching at all anymore.

After a few days of really not clenching at all I've noticed my mouth opens a lot straighter, but there is intense pain and swelling on my left side. I don't know if this is because my jaw has shifted or what (also the "pulling" sensation I felt on my right side is basically relieved). I have an appointment with an orofacial pain/tmj clinic but it's not until march. I also have an MRI of jaw area sceduled for april 4. It's so long away =(

My question is....approx how long will it take to heal the joint from a "shift"? I've been eating only soft food and applying heat a few times a day. It's been almost a month, and I'm still in a lot of pain....and so long to wait for my appointments =( any words of encouragement will be appreciated... I'm a big baby

Re: Question :)

I wish I could give you a time frame but I think everyone is so different in their healing it just depends on how you heal and what can heal properly without causing you pain. Just do not try to rush the healing process. Unfortunately TMJ is NOT for those of us who have No Patience!!!! If I am "suppose to be learning a lesson from having TMJ" I really HOPE it is NOT patience. Because I have NONE and must not have the gene at all.
Are you referring to just healing from this last episode or from the TMJ completely?
I hope you find relief soon from the pain.

Re: Question :)

I was referring to this last episode. Hoping my appointment in march will be the start of it actually healing. I've felt like a prisoner in my own body for so long due to tmjd, I cant go out and do anything anymore... this is just so depressing
