New here - questions about symptoms etc

Hi -

Just joined this board. I have experienced a very stressful year - I was married in December, 2004 - and left my husband 7 months later after realizing he is an end-stage alcoholic at 39 years old, with cirhosis of the liver - all of which he hid from me (amazingly enough) for the 3 years I knew him. After enduring a great deal of emotional and verbal abuse I moved out. I tried and tried to get him help, but he continued to lie and pretend he was getting sober, but it is a powerful, insidious disease, and there was nothing i could do.

The situation progressed with him stalking me at work and i required a restraining order - they also found a gun at his employer and he was fired.

My divorce just became final last week - and I have been doing so well, I have a great job and very supportive friends and family - but I now think that all the stress is beginning to present itself.

I began to see a therapist back in october and he put me on 75mg of Zoloft and Ambien at night. In the past few months I have noticed that at night my jaw is very fatigued and a bit achey. A few weeks ago I had pain in my lower left molar just infront of my wisdom tooth - I saw the dentist who saw no decay - removed the small filling and saw that the tooth had a small fracture in it. This was most likely the result of grinding/bruxism.

She bonded the tooth and refilled it and last Tuesday she prepped it for a crown. I had a bad reaction to the epinephrine in the lidocaine - uncontrollable leg tremors and my mouth shook and I could not walk. It finally wore off and she drilled my tooth. I explained to her that I had jaw pain and bad headaches and recently began a slight tremor in my lip - so she said I needed to see a TMJ specialist - who is also an oral surgeon and maxlofacial surgeon.

I have continued to have pain in this one tooth - and my dentist is away. the crown will be ready in another week or so. All weekend I had unbearable pain in my jaw and head and stomach problems. I just read that Zoloft can cause bruxism!

I saw the oral surgeon today and he said I definitely have TMJ and my right side - which is my bad side - has swollen lymphglands. I also cannot open my mouth as wide as I should be able to.

He said I have a lot of anxiety and stress - I need an MRI so he can evaluate the joint. He also wants me to see a neurologist because he thinks something else is going on - possibly he meds need to be stopped or changed. He said my bite appears to be stable.

He made a soft splint for me to wear at all times - and when my dentist returns she will make me a permanent one - that will click in and stay in place - taken out only when I eat. I get my MRI tomorrow and also will see an endodontist to be sure the tooth with the temporary on it does not need a root canal.

Has anyone on here fractured teeth due to TMJ?
What about the tremors in my lip? They are sporadic, don't always occur. And my pain gets worse as the day progresses - headaches are at end of day and are behind my eyes and in my forehead along with the pain in my jaw.

Has anyone taken Zoloft and noticed it caused or worsened their TMJ?

I was wondering if orthodontia might help - he said sometimes it makes it worse. I had braces as a kid - but my teeth have shifted.

He also prescribed 800mg of Motrin every 8 hours for me and that I eat only soft foods and small meals, to keep my blood sugar at a steady rate, but what does that have to do with TMJ?

I have lost about 12 lbs due to the Zoloft and now the TMJ. It hurts to eat.

Thanks for any feedback!

The Zoloft and all other SSRI antidepressants can definitely cause or worsen tmj by causing noctural bruxism. Before you proceed with any other tmj treatment, you should get off of the Zoloft and see if your tmj gets better. If it does, then you and your doctor can find an alternate way of treating your depression.

Thanks - I stopped the Zoloft. I am actually ready to come off it anyway. I saw the endodontist today - and definitely need a root canal in my tooth. I go for the TMJ MRI today and then see my internist to discuss seeing a neurologist. Both the oral surgeon and the endodontist do not think that TMJ would cause the twitches in my trigeminal nerve. I just hope it is nothing serious.

Keep you posted and thanks again.

Spasming muscles around the TMJ's would indeed affect the trigeminal nerve.
