TMJ pain or tooth pain

I have posted before, but I have a new question. My right ear hurts all of the time, mostly. However, it hurts more not in the ear, but it hurts where you can place your index finger outside the ear: between the ear lobe and the upper part of the ear, not in the ear canal.

I have had two root canals on the back teeth on the left side and that did not help. Just wondering what I should do. Please respond; I am desparate for answers.

Re: TMJ pain or tooth pain

I have seen a dentist. Nothing shows abnormal on Xrays or MRI. I am wondering if this is muscular tmj?

Re: TMJ pain or tooth pain

my ear hurts as well i think in the same place you are describing. it is very tender there and it feels like a sharp pain...i dont know if thats the same thing you are talking about. also my ear lobe sometimes gets very red and swollen and it feels like the whole side of my face and my ear has a fever. the doctor told me that because of all the inflammtion in my tmj that since hte ear is so close, that it becomes inflammed as well...

I have that pain all the time on/off in my left ear and it's from TMJ. Sometimes my right ears will ache, but usually I will get pains/sometimes sharp pains in my left ear.

Re: TMJ pain or tooth pain

I would say more than likely you have inflamation in the TMJoint. I have the same thing. MRI reports showed I have a bone spur on the left side and the disc on each side are dislocated. I also have osteoarthritus to some degree in both sides. If your joints haven't gotten as messed up as mine, seeing a TMJ specialist could help you. I have just started with a NTI splint that keeps me from clenching at night. However, the pain is still bad during the day. Almost like someone playing tug of war with my jaw muscles. Rotate Tylenol and Advil or Motrin every two hours for the pain. Unfortunately that doesn't work for me any more, but hopefully it will for you. Be careful taking to much Advil or Motrin. It can mess with your stomach. Hope you feel better soon.

Re: TMJ pain or tooth pain

ditto on the motrin... I took too much motrin when i first was diagnosed and it messed up my stomach. It ended up created a serious problem where it was eating away the lining in my stomach. The doctor said it wasn't neccesarrily too much of it, it was just that I couldn't eat much food and you have to eat food in order for the motrin to work right.

also, I would have to agree that inflammtion is(one) of your problems. It is one of mine and it makes since that the TMJ inflammation would affect the ear...

Re: TMJ pain or tooth pain

Jeffwtn,
I was dx with TMJ and Bruxism when I was 10 yrs old. I would first make sure that you do not have an infection especially if this is the first time you have experienced this. My ears and jaw will hurt if I had a bad night of grinding. I am not sure if your doctor or dentist has suggested this but at night I wear a night guard it really cuts down on the joint pain and my teeth hurting.
The other thing that does help me, Depending on my stress level I will take 5mg of Flexril at night and that helps with relaxing my jaw. I would suggest going to TMJ specialist so that can dx you better as to what is happening.
It will get better.

Re: TMJ pain or tooth pain

I've had that pain too and in my case, it's from TMJ. My Acupuncturist treats it and it's now under control. There's also an exercise I learned in PT where you put your index finger just inside the lobe and pull down on it. It stretches the affected muscle .
