Need Advice...feel like I'm going crazy!

I haven't been a member long, but I have posted on the anxiety board before. It seems that there are related symptoms with panic and tmj. Here is a list of what I have going on, just wondering if anyone has any advice for me. Sorry if its long...but I am stressed out from this.

I get horrible headaches, every day. Had an MRI...nothing going on there. I was put on Verapamil to help blood move through the vessels easier so I can't take Advil or Ibuprofen because of the reaction to the Verapamil. It worked great the first month, but now have headaches again daily. My headaches are generally tension type, with some sharp pains all over frequently, but they don't last long. Now this part sounds weird, but it feels like my brain is trying to pull away from my skull. Don't know of any other way to describe it!

I do know that I grind my teeth, my dentist can tell by the wear on my teeth. I feel tense in my jaw, like I can't it, but I don't have jaw pain. I do have fullness in the ears, like I need to pop them, but they won't pop. I have pain around my eyes occasionally. I feel like I can't open my eyes all the way, but they are open. My forehead, upper face (around eyes and nose and sometimes lips) feel numb. The pain in my ears is both sides, not just one. I do "crack" my neck all the time, trying to relieve the pressure and it sometimes works, but not always.

Now, this being said, when I get these pains, it causes panic attacks and it is horrible. I take Lexapro daily for these and Ativan as needed...which thankfully isn't that often.

All I really want to know is, what are the most common symptoms of TMJ? I have an appointment with a ear dr. next Friday, suggested by my neuro. Hopefully things will work out! Thanks in advance to all who read and answer this post!

There's a full list of tmj symptoms posted at the top of this forum but I think the most common symptoms are jaw clicking or popping, clenching or grinding, ear fullness, headaches, eye, face, neck, head and jaw pain, feeling swollen or hard in front of ears, ear ringing or tongue feeling sore or swollen. Did any of your symptoms develop after you started taking the meds for the headaches or you had all of this even before then? - certain meds can cause clenching or grinding which can then trigger other tmj symptoms.

    Hey spokane,
Can't really add much more than Thelma. Sounds like your symptoms overlap w/ those of TMJ, but are also generic. Best to see your ENT and ask about the possibility of TMJ after he's done w/ his portion of the exam. I can relate to the panic though - before I found out my symptoms were TMJ related I had a panic attack and also had quite a lot of anxiety (sometimes when my symptoms flare up hard, i still question whether or not this is all TMJ). It's completely understandable.

you sound so much like me at the moment.
I've been hvaing eye, cheek, nose, ear and even palate of my mouth problems.
even the numbness, i find it gets worse if its cold too..
I dont know asactly for sure if I have tmj right now though, I was told a few months ago I injured my jaw and it needed to heal, wich was causing me different symtoms, this time its a bit different.
but the jaw has been popping and griding alot lately, the other week I was brushing my teeth and my jaw couldn't open much and it felt as if it was going to get stuck.
I've been stressing so hard over the pressures in my face,
I feel as if I am going crazy too and what makes it worse is Drs dont seem to care, they just fob u off saying oh its just a virus, or oh its sinus, now i been told its not sinus and its possibly tmj.
so I went and saw my Maxillofacial surgion who will be taking my wisdom teeth out and she took a look, and felt my jaw, she has reffered me to a physio and also someone who deals with tmj and oral diseases.
I have to wait till the 19th of july to see the tmj specialist, so untill then i am going to be left with this anxiety of not knowing what is going on.
I really feel your pain atm, as I am going through it too

Re: Need Advice...feel like I'm going crazy!

Thanks for all the messages. I am seeing an ENT next friday..hopefully thats a good place to start. I hate to say it, but the only time I don't have headaches is when I am drinking alcohol! or sleeping, but could be I just don't feel it. I am trying not to get my hopes up that I actually have this, cause any answer is better than none. I will keep you posted! Thanks again!

People are so different in what can help/hinder them. For me, coffee helps to ease some of my pain/headaches... I know for others it can cause them. I completely cut alcohol out of my 'diet' months and months ago, because it caused headaches for me.

Thanks for the list...I noticed I do a lot of the things I am not supposed to! Its not consciously, I don't even realized I do it! I am starting with the ENT...the pressure in my ears is drivin me nuts. I will go on from there, see what happens.

Here's my two cents: DON'T get your wisdom out unless they are really causing problems. Getting mine out really aggravated my joint.

If you're craving alcohol b/c it helps with the pain, try taking magnesium. It will help you to relax, and alcohol has magnesium in it, which can make you want to have a drink.

See if you can get a TENS unit. I really love mine when I'm especially tight in the face.
