Undiagonosed Problems... possible TMJ?

Hihi all... This is gonna be a fairly long post, I apologize and thank you for reading it!

I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with me for some time now... I thought I had an answer 3 weeks ago when I saw the ENT doctor. He assumed I had a very bad sinus infection that had matriculated into my ears and my lymphnodes causing bad headaches, ear pain, ear ringing, swollen and painful lymphnodes, neck pain etc... he put me on Augmentin for 10 days. After the 10 days were up, my sinuses were better and the pain in my lymphnodes was gone. I had fluid behind my ear when I saw the Dr. 3 weeks ago but I'm not sure if that's gone or not.

Basically, my other symptoms are still there.

I get headaches...all the time. Sometimes I wake up with headaches... I also get like quick headaches...where there is a sharp pain above my eyes and then it disapates in a few minutes.

My left ear has been ringing non stop for 3 weeks. It is driving me absolutely insane... my right ear will sometimes ring as well but it comes and goes. The "loudness" of the ringing also fluctuates...

I also looked at the TMJ symptom list and found some things on there that I never really considered as part of my problem...

Watery eyes, light sensitivity, scalp painful to the touch (I have noticed spots on my head that hurt when I press them), ears itch a lot, I've had problems with my throat that I attributed to allergies but I often get little sore throats that go away in a few hours or a day, neck problems... stiffness, soreness...

I haven't noticed anything with my jaw that jumps and screams OMG you have TMJ... but I do hear (in my head) popping/creaking noise in my jaw when I open it all the way, its kinda stiff when opening completely and when I eat... if I chew too long my jaw gets "tired" or weak from chewing too much.

Does this sound like investigating TMJ is a good idea? I've been going to so many doctors and specialists lately that I really want to make sure I have good reason before going to another one. I'm getting really fet up with Dr.'s and feeling like I have to diagnose myself before I go see one.

Re: Undiagonosed Problems... possible TMJ?

Your story and symptoms are almost identical to mine-I do often have sinus infections due to allergies so for years I have always attributed my symptoms to allergies/sinus troubles but now after two rounds of antibiotics I still have the symptoms and bad jaw and teeth pain that gets worse with chewing which then causes headaches so I have discovered it is most likely tmj. I have had popping/clicking noises forever but never headaches like I have now. I would investigate tmj if I were you-talk to your doctor or dentist first. Good luck

Hmm... interesting.

Would an ENT doctor have any insight into this? Or do I have to see a TMJ specialist specifically? Also, how do you find one? I went on my health insurance's website to do a doctor find but there is no option to check for "TMJ docs".

My personal experience is that ENTs know very little. You may want to go the dental route ... finding a dentist or other mouth specialist.

Re: Undiagonosed Problems... possible TMJ?

My problem started strickly with plugged ears. After 4 1/2 months I have been treated by both my family Dr and then an ENT for Allergies. nasel spray and antibiotics did not good. ENT found nothing wrong with my hearing. I have had both a CAT scan and an MRI. Both were normal. I was sent to an audiologist who ruled out any inner ear problem and was referred to an Oral Surgeon which I will finally see on Monday. My medical insurance said that if the problem in medical and not dental they will pay 100%. Every insurance co. is different though. Call your insurance co to find out.

After 2 months I started developing other symptoms such as headaches, neck and should aches, short term sore throats, jaw and teeth pain, ringing in my ears, head pressure, jaw popping and clicking and when I walk I feel every step in my head..step POUND...step POUND. Walking on carpet is not bad but tile and cement is a killer. I still have the plugged ears which is the worse. The feeling when you are in the mountains or on an airplane and you feel like you need to pop your ears but they won't pop. When I talk I have a vibration in my head. The louder I talk the louder the vibration.

I was told by my dentist some time ago that I had TMJ but it never bothered me. I just hope the oral surgeon has a cure for me. I would check into seeing a TMJ specialist or an Oral Surgeon. Most general dentists do not seem to be very knowledgable with TMJ.

Re: Undiagonosed Problems... possible TMJ?

I was fiinally diagonesd with TMJ Dysfunction back in 1991. I can't tell you how many doctors and how much money I spent prior to that trying to find out what was wrong with me. I did eventually have to have surgery after going to an orthodontist for about two years to equilabrate my bite. My one suggestion to you would ask for your doctor to do an MRI of the joints. they generally will be a mouth guard that they will use to take the scans of the joints in the open and close positions. I hope this helps you in some small way.
