Question Tmj Problem Or Root Canal Needed

So I have had issues with tmj for years now. However, just lately I have had swelling on my right jaw cheek and neck. It actually feels like someone has punched me in all three of those areas. When I touch it it stings, I went to my dentist he gave me an antibiotic so the swelling has gone away but still have pain there. Also I have scheduled an appointment with my doctor as well. I was chewing gum about one week ago and I swear right after that my problems started. Is it possible the gum chewing may have agitated my jaw and that whole side of my mouth. Let me know what you think. I am really concerned. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!

All the best CK

Re: Tmj Problem Or Root Canal Needed

The fact that the swelling responded postively to the antibiotic would suggest that there is an underlying dental infection - which could also be aggravating your tmj symptoms as well. But in my experience with tmj, the swelling I had did not respond to antibiotics since it was more of a muscle knot and probably due to overworked muscles. If it is an infection it could be it has affected your lymph nodes in yuor neck and a "bad" infection can cause pain and swelling to radiate to other adjoining areas. You may want to see an endontonist to see if perhaps one your teeth needs a root canal - its possible you had a cavity close to the nerve and chewing gum aggravated it or pushed more debris into it and as a result the nerve and roots of the tooth need to be treated.
