Could I have TMJ??

I have been having troubles with my ears for the last few months and my ENT diagnosed me with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction a couple weeks ago. He prescribed me Nasonex, nasal irrigation and decongestants. But the thing is, my nose and sinuses are completely clear and I have no congestion. I haven't had a cold in almost a year and I don't have allergies. Needless to say his treatment isn't working. So someone mentioned to me I might have TMJ???

Here are my symptoms:
- ears creak when I swallow
- occasional ear fullness
- stiff neck
- ringing in ears
- sinus pressure
- jaw pops lightly on one side and grinds on the other side when opening or closing my mouth
- occasional headaches
- occasional dizziness (especially when I am stressed)

I've also noticed lately that I never close my teeth together anymore because it isn't comfortable. I either put my tongue between my teeth to rest on or I chew on the inside of my cheek. My symptoms started about 3 months ago during a stressful time in my life.

I am taking my kids to their orthodontist appt tomorrow and I think I may mention this to him. Or would it be better to talk to my dentist or Dr.?

Do you think it's possible I have TMJ?

Thank you in advance,

Sponsors Lightbulb

Re: Could I have TMJ??

Speak with the orthodontist when you see him tomorrow - and let him check your bite if he has time or make another appt with him since he may have to take a tomogram to check your joints - the biting of the inner cheek and inability to put your teeth together are usually sure signs of tmj - it could be you are having a problem with one or both of your discs (the slight popping and grinding sounds). Your other symptoms would suggest it as well.

Re: Could I have TMJ??

Those symptoms sound very familiar, particularly the slight popping on one side and grinding on the other, however, the tmj specialists suggested it to be something else. A lot of those specialists look for a loud, very audible crack or pop but I suppose cases may vary.

If the orthodontist can't help you, I would suggest you go to your local university's orofacial pain clinic and not some random tmj clinic for a consult.

The last phases of orthodontics is actually what started mine.

Re: Could I have TMJ??

Thank you for your replies. I had made an appt with my Dentist for today but my son woke up with the flu so I had to cancel. I am going in for x-rays and testing next week. Since I live in a small city I don't think there are any tmj clinics in the area and we don't have a pain clinic as far as I know, so I will see what my dentist has to say and will go from there.
