Anyone get braces, crown, jaw surgery to fix occulsion?

Has anyone had either braces or crowns/shaving of teeth or surgery to improve occulsion? I am getting another set of impressions in a few weeks and i know my dentist will bring up some of these options.

Here is my case: no history of jaw trauma, had braces about 16 years ago. I started to get pressure headaches soon after college (about 5 years ago). Had a MRI/MRA and nothing showed up. One morning driving to work i yawned really big and my jaw got stuck. It remained that way for only a few seconds. I never had prior history of jaw problems. I was recommended to a TMJ specialist who made me a lower night gaurd to be worn every night. After wearing guard for 2 months, i woke up one morning and couldn't open my jaw very wide. My muscles were in spasm and i was sent to PT. After about 3 months of PT, my opening opened to about 25-30MM. I kept going back to my TMJ dentist for my appliance to be adjusted. Finally after about a year, my bite or joint space became stable and my dentist took another impression of my bite. He had mentioned that jaw surgery or braces would be my only option to correct my bite or I could just continue wearing my night gaurd and hopefully nothing will change. I decided to do just that, and i went a year and a half without any problems. My opening stayed at 30MM and i didn't have any muscle spasms. My only complaint was occasional neck stiffness. My right disc did not recapture by my left disc could click every once in a whie.

This Novemebr, I awoke again and my jaw was stuck. My left dics was stuck! I applied heat to my face for a day and it just popped back into place. So, i;ve been taking it easy, went back to the dentist for 3 appliance adjustments (1 today) and he mentioned that if he doesn't have to make many adjustments next time, they would take another set of impressions. UGH, i just feel so hopeless!

Well I did the equilibration and crowns early on and it really didn't help - if anything it made things worse, but this was with a dentist that didn't use splints but instead used a discluder - similar to an NTI. Dentists/specialists I counsulted with subsequent to that each told me that nothing should have been done to permanently adjust the teeth for at least a year or more of being symptoms free during treatment with splints or the discluder. But I have more of a muscular issue and not one of displacement so not sure this would apply in your case.

Why or what does the dentist say the jaw surgery or crowns or braces will achieve that the splint is not capable of maintaining at this point?

BTW - there are some older posts in the Dental Problems forum of some members that were undergoing braces to treat tmj that you might want to search for.

TL, what an excellent question!!
I also agree completely on not doing anything permanently until the there are no symptoms for a while which can be achieved in splints, etc.

From all the messages I read here, braces were more the cause of the new problems than the end.

Thanks for your input!

My dentist said that my bite is way off and by improving it, it would put less stress on my joints. I never really had major symptoms except for permanent locked jaw and occasional neck stiffness.

Its an iffy and risky undertaking as if if they don't work they are not undoable and if any adverse affects result they are permanent and can actually complicate your case more so going forward - but that is my opinion just based on my experience so far. The splint should be able to equalize your bite and give your joints enough space that they need to work correctly - granted this is not a permanent solution and it could be as your splint wears down from use you then experience a return of symptoms and the splint needs to be remade or built up so if that is the case then if your dentist does redo your splint and you eventually return to being symptoms free for at least 6 mos you could then look into these options again. As you know Phase II of treamtent often is to make permanent the changes the splint accomplished which allows you to be symptom free - although not all choose to or need to pursue this phase for some it does end the cycle of pain and more treatment.
