Jaw popped - extreme pain

Just hoping for some advice on how to get through this pain since my jaw popped. 39 yr old healthy female - nice/healthy teeth

I yawned and there was a loud pop on the right side of my jaw. The pain at the time of the pop was unreal, like being stabbed with a knitting needle. I was driving and almost had to pull over. Since, it's been a throbbing pain. I can't open my mouth all the way or bring my jaw forward. The pain is up into my ear too some, I put a cotton swab barely inside that ear and just the slight movement hurt so much. It hurts most in the mornings and is stiff. Usually it loosens up some, but there is always a dull pain and extreme pain if I move my jaw at all.

It's been about a week since it popped, so how long before it heals? Anything I can do besides taking Aleve to make it better? If the pain goes on, how long do I let it go before seeing a dentist?

My jaw pops from time to time (once a year probably) but it's never been this painful before. Usually a day or two and it's done... also the actual pop never hurt that bad before. What the heck did I do?

If your jaw is misaligned go see a trauma doctor and they will snap it back in for you. Hope this helps. after that see a tmj dentist you may be grinding or clenching your teeth.

Re: Jaw popped - extreme pain

Hi there----when you heard the loud pop, your disc may have dislocated (anteriorly), especially if you have a limited opening. You need to NOT go to the ER to have someone manually try to recapture the disc,,,you need to try and recapture this on your own. Put warm moist heat on the side that is locked for about 20 min., then try to gag yourself (pretty hard). This will hopefully recapture the disc , and restore your opening to normal. I've done this many times---I know it works. If you can't use your fingers to gag, use a spoon handle or something---sorry to be graphic. LOL. The longer you are locked, the harder it will be to recapture the disc. You need to be evaluated by a tmj specialist. Someone who is neuromuscular, and is a Functional Jaw ORthodontist. Look on the ICCMO website for starts. Any questions, let me know.....good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. Still in agony here and I was going to call my dentist. Thought I'd check back here... I'll check out the ICCMO site first.
