Anyone else with tongue & throat problems?

I wonder if my newish symptoms are a part of my TMJD or somehting else, and if anyone else can relate?
I keep getting an achy tongue on the underside - it almost feels like its pulled back or tight or something. It sometimes affects my speech, or at least its harder to pronounce certain sounds though my hubbie says i sound normal lol.
I also get an ache on the roof of my mouth, and a strange 'clicking' when i swallow in my throat(but not food and liquids only saliva).
My throat also sometimes feels tight and just plain weird. All the symptom seem worse if i am anxious and stressed.
I haven't particularly noticed my actual jaw being more clicky or painful. My doctor said the symptoms 'dont ring any alarm bells' so im reluctant to go back and bother him. These symptoms have been around for a couple of months, but i had a week or so where they were nearly gone, but then came back.

Hi there.....IF you have tmd...they are definitely common symptoms....a tight necktie feeling around the throat....tongue spasms...tight throat feeling. Also, you may find that food feels like it's gonna get stuck in your throat when swallowing--or you need to move your head forward to gulp the food down slightly. Usually, it's a sign that the jaw is set too far back---and with the help of the proper orthodic..it can be repositioned to a better place for proper function. I am in treatment right now...and had all those symptoms to some degree. I had esophageal spasms so bad at one point before treatment...I couldn't eat solid food for weeks. It was awful.
My dentist treats tmd with the neuromuscular approach...and functional ortho.

    Thank you Jill.

I definitely do have TMD according to my doctor, but its never been looked into at all. Though my doc was quite 'impressed' (lovely) with how much my jaw goes out of place when i open my mouth. If these symptoms aren't related then i have no idea, and that worries me that it could be a cancer or something. Though the symptoms dont really match up if im being rational (which im not!)

Ive noticed that if i press my cheek beneath my cheekbone - kind of where my molars are, i get some relief - would this match up?

Yes, for sure....All that you have stated is related to TMD....the throat symptoms...pressing on trigger points within your jaw area and getting relief....etc....unfortunately.....it's all related. MD's., and ENT's do not know enough about TMD to really give you definitive answers....I thought I had throat cancer when the esophageal spasms started.....but it was from my jaw.....I would consult with a good tmj specialist that does neuromuscular dentistry ....and functional Jaw Orthodontics. Look on the Great tmj doctors thread at the top of this page..maybe there is one around you. I also have posted the associations that these types of docs belong to. Good luck....J.

Can you explain what you mean by this? I'm very fascinated by this because I think it's my issue as well.

    I have muscular TMJ.

I have tongue issues with it being tired and my tongue literally tilting to one side at rest, I feel like my lips are not sitting comfortably, almost in a weird lip posture, I eat food and feel like it wants to fly out of my mouth if I don't squeeze my lips together. It's the strangest feeling. I get scared it's not muscle imbalance but muscle weakness. Does the lip and feeling like your mouth is sort of all over the place while chewing, does that correlate to what you're talking about?

I had some speech slurring about two years ago and why your explanation caught my eye is because I would instinctively move my head/jaw forward and my speech would sound perfect! I never knew why, only that it helped!

Hi there.....Just a thought...have you ruled out Dystonia? With saying that though....tmj can also cause everything that you are feeling. When I say gulp your food down...and move your head forward to swallow....I mean that I used to literally want to choke when I was eating...from esophageal spasms...and my jaw being too far back. I would take a bite out of something....and it would feel "caught" in my throat...and then I would have to literally do the motion like a "gulp" to get it down. I hope that helps. I used to get tongue spasms too...like a charlie horse in your tongue....that really hurts!....
I would bet that you could be helped by a neuromuscular orthodic like I wear. Especially if you are mostly muscular.....for sure it will help. I would get a consult with someone who does NM dentistry, and functional Jaw orthodontics. When they do the EMG testing.....they can tell you exactly what muscles are functioning correctly, and the ones that are not. That is a critical part of the diagnostic testing...and needs to be done to fabricate the orthodic...and also it is used to know where the orthodic needs to be adjusted. Look on the Great tmj doctors thread...I have posted how to find a good NM dentist, and what organizations they belong to. You may even start by looking on the Las Vegas Institute website...but make sure that they have a lot of experience...and are a functional jaw ortho. Good luck!
