I have no locking jaw either,I can open my mouth wide, I can also eat what I want.I have pain in my muscles right beside the joints themselves.

although non of my symptoms are causing pain, more just annoyances and dull aches.

just feels like ive been punched in my right cheek. feels swollen in massetur and achey in joint under ear.
definately feels like right jaw joint is out of place.

plus the cloggy ear sensation with crunchy, grinding noises.

i also have a bit of a nagging tightness sensation in right side of throat.

but ive noticed my symptoms dwindle away and come back.

they were unnoticable for a while up until 1.5weeks ago when i thought i was coming down with a cold.
(ALL of my symtoms came about around august)

scratchy throat, tickly cough, then my ear REALLY felt clogged/full and water logged. thats when the aches flared up again.

cough and itchy sick "feeling" is gone but aches still lingering.

Have you been checked officially for tmj? Or has this been similar to tmj and in turn you feel it's tmj? I'd suggest trying to see a tmj dentist, because if it is tmj it may take help for it to go away.Ive been struggling since march and I'm still in trouble,My masseter like yours aches and twitches sometimes throbs.Im demanding my scan on dec 21st , to check for displaced disks etc.I am also contemplating if this may be a neck problem/posture problem. My sinuses also bother me,as you can see I have a lot of problems all stemming from march this year.Previous to this date I was fine, so either I damaged something while weightlifting or I'm one unlucky guy to have all these problems happen at the same time

Re: What is/was your main TMJ symptom?

I have the same thing that the original poster listed. I do not have jaw pain when opening/closing. My jaw does not click. I have slight deviation to the right when I open/close my mouth but the dentist told me that it was not unusual, most people have a slight deviation so it could be normal. He did however, tell me I had terrible occlusion. I am having that problem fixed right now. I've also been fitted with an NTI splint for the night to prevent tooth clenching (which I do a fair bit from time to time).

My symptoms are intermittent stuffy ear, buzzing in the ear, and that same sort of sensation you describe - just in front of the ear, around the jaw joint - a sort of tightness or pulling, like something is swelling just underneath. My physio said that my jaw muscles were extremely tight there. It's like the muscles are in spasm whenever I get my ear symptoms. I would consider the jaw joint sensations much more of "discomfort" than outright "pain". It is occasionally quite sore and tender though. When pushed, I can feel my left jaw is more tender than the right, but again, not very painful or anything. Just a light, cramping feeling from time to time.

Re: What is/was your main TMJ symptom?

My main symptom is the jaw/face & neck pain and the loud snapping crack that happens when I open my mouth too far, laugh or sing too long, or chew too much. Wearing my NTI specifically while driving & reading during the day, and definitely all night, and switching to soft & low chew foods helps the muscle pain quite a bit. I also take a muscle relaxer every night which seems to help my jaw & neck start from a more relaxed state each morning. I've also suffered ulcers (2) due to the high volume of ibuprofen I've used in the last 15 years of my TMD. Tylenol does not touch my TMD pain. Only ibuprofen... so, I skip pain meds now and deal with it through ice and self massage - not fun most days.

    Hi all,

My main TMJ symptom that i've had for 6+ months is ear ringing, the dentist said this is a less common symptom- it's driving me crazyyyy. I have an appointment with an ENT specialist. Anyone else suffered from this with their TMJ? Need some reassurance/ comfort here...

Yup. I had some ringing myself. It was accompanied by ear stuffiness and eventually some ear pain and hearing loss. In my case, my jaw discs had slipped forward a bit which resulted in my lower jaw being pushed back towards my ear. After about 3 months in my lower mandibular repositioning splint, my symptoms significantly decreased. I haven't had any ringing recently. I'm about 3 years into treatment.

My ENT, who I've gone to for years and really love, wasn't actually able to do a lot. He did give me some short term prescriptions of muscle relaxers which helped with the worst of my muscle spasms. He did some testing on me which ruled out other ear issues. The same with my Audiologist.

I found my best results with a highly trained Functional Orthodontist who specializes in orofacial pain treatment and TMJ.

Re: What is/was your main TMJ symptom?

    All

I am adding to what my symptoms where and what I discovered, my main issue was jaw clicking and popping on the left side. I also had an issue with lock jaw and misalignment, although I had little ear discomfort it was more of a sensation of water being in my ear. This only was noticeable the second time my TMJ came back. I also had an issue with tense jaw muscles and scalp/temple tension.

I also suffer from tension headaches and this is something I have had since my early twenties. I do get them now and then but since I have had TMJ my preventative treatments means I know which symptoms to look out for and how to resolve it before it gets worse.

From all of the posters in this thread a lot of people have mentioned scalp tension and some neck problems with misalignment. The source of my problem has become apparent to me only after started reading and participating in this forum and thanks to something MountainReader mentioned.

About 18 months ago I injured my right shoulder training in the gym. I was doing some chest exercises and injured the shoulder, instead of my spotter grabbing the weight in time and due to it happening so quickly I dropped the weight on the right side and tilted over the bench still holding the weight in my left hand.

I somehow injured the shoulder muscles in the front and the rear of my shoulder and dislocated it slightly, this took about 2 years to finally get back to normal. What did happen subsequently is that the imbalance in strength in my shoulders started twisting my frame and building up tension in various areas of my body.

This tension worked its way into my neck and scalp and I ended up with TMJ. Symptoms as described, jaw clicking, muscle tension, jaw misalignment, scalp tension, sensitive teeth and lock jaw.

I was able to find ways of releasing tension using myofascial treatment on my jaw muscles, scalp and temples. I also did neck exercises, stretching and full body stretching. I was during this time also having issues with my middle back not releasing tension regardless of the stretching I was doing.

The only way I was able to get that resolved was using a foam roller and working on my legs, hips and back. This improved my flexibility, and helped release referred tension in various parts of my body which was causing my TMJ.

My shoulder is 98% good but I still am working on it, without my stretching and maintenance my TMJ will return but by keeping my muscle tension from getting worse I live a normal healthy life with no TMJ.
