Question Where do i start?

New hear. Inthe last few months i have come to realize i have tmj. I have had tinitus for some time but it is getting worse. My bite is way off, jaw hurts. I cannot hold it postition. Gravity seems to have more control than anything else. I did not sleep at all last night. I also get a feeling of bugs mving in my ear. Drives me crazy sometimes. I know it is a nerve thing. stops when i put my finger in my ear. Feels like a centipede.

Ok- where do i make my first appointment. Does inusurance cover help with tmj. I hope so. Now i notice headaches are coming. Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Re: Where do i start?

Hi There Anniemoe,

Welcome to the boards! I am sorry to hear you believe you have tmj dysfunction. Please dont despair, if you arm yourself with knowledge regarding your condition and try conservative therapies before surgical procedures you will find relief soon!

First and foremost, have you been evaluated by any kind of doctor yet? If you haven't you should seek out a tmj specialist in your area and get an initial evaluation. make sure that you get an mri scheduled so that you can really find out what is going on with your jaw joints. It is possible you have a displaced jaw disc that could be causing some of your pain/problems. Please please please get this done so you know whether or not you are looking at a disc displacement/disc injury. Once this has been done both you and your doctor will have a better idea of what is causing your symptoms.

The tickling you feel inside your ear are the little muscles in your ear and surrounding your ear spasming and moving slightly. It is very uncomfortable I know, but try heat on your jaw and surrounding muscles such as your neck and upper back.

Try taking some advil or ibuprofin to reduce some of your inflammation. It should help some in calming down your muscles and reducing some of your pain. Don't take more than directed on the bottle or you could cause other problems.

I would suggest scheduling a consultation with a couple of different doctors in your area and get multiple treatment opinions before you decide how to move forward. You may end up being more comfortable with one over the other. Don't be surprised if you get very different opinions from these doctors. There isn't one standard of treatment for tmj and people respond differently to different treatment methods.

Try to determine the true cause of your problem and then once you know that begin with the doctor who can correct that cause.

sorry to give you so much information at once. I just didn't want your reply to go unanswered as we would love for you to stay on these boards and update us with your treatment and story.

Do you remember having any kind of injury to the head and neck that could have caused this? Any recent dental treatment? Try to think of any cause or change that may have happened shortly before your problems/symptoms began.

I wish you luck!
