Does anyone have phlegm/mucous problems from TMJ?

Is this a symptom of TMJ, or is it something else? I've tried antibiotics about 2 or 3 times & it goes away for a few weeks, than the phlegm/mucous problem just comes back. Usually once or twice a day I have to spit out greenish looking phlegm from my throat. After I do it once or twice I don't have to do it for the rest of the day which is what is weird to me. This problem has been going on for a few years, so it can't be an infection since I'm sure I would have gotten worse. I just want to know if anyone else gets this & what to do about it. I thought it was sinus problems for the longest time, but I've already gotten tests done & it came up normal. I don't know where to go from here.

Re: Does anyone have phlegm/mucous problems from TMJ?

For a few weeks, I had sore throat, cough, and phlegm. My MD thinks it's because i sleep with my mouth open (my splint is bulky in front, i sleep with neck pillow rather an actual pillow, and i end up with a gaping mouth at night). She said sleeping with an open mouth introduces bacteria and viruses into the mouth, and the body produces mucus in response and tries to cough it out.

This became a full-pledged flu after 3 weeks, and then it went away. Then it comes back. The problem comes and goes. I have it again today.

Thanks for the reply. I just have no idea what my problem is since it's been going on for so long. I usually always have a brain fogginess feeling as well that goes along with this & inner ear pain at times. My dentist thinks I have a TMJ problem & that's why I got the night guard. But I'm not really sure if it's helping all that much. I've been wearing it for about 3 weeks, and I do feel my jaw muscles aren't as tense as they were but that's really all that it's doing. I really don't know where I go from here to fix these issues. I just can't live the rest of my life with these problems though. Whenever I go to my doctor all he does is prescribes me anti-biotics & they don't fix the problem. And my dentist only gives me a night guard. So I'm really at a loss.

Is your MD an ENT? You may want to consult with an ENT and get a referral to an infectious disease specialist (bacteria, viruses, etc). I've spent a long time reading academic journals on TMJ and have never encountered prolonged colds-like symptoms that spans years. It's usually pain in the sinuses due to a pinched nerve in the TMJ area. Mine was an actual flu virus with symptoms exacerbated by my open mouth at night.

I think an MD needs to get a swab from your throat and look at it in a lab. You may have some form of infection.

It's possible for an infection to last for years? I'd like to think I'd feel worse as time goes on if I had an untreated infection. I feel overall better compared to where I was a year or so ago, but I still don't feel right. I did used to get really bad sinus problems for quite a long time. I used to barely be able to breathe through my nose & would use strong sinus sprays that didn't even do anything. But I barely have sinus problems anymore except for when I wake up where it seems my taste buds are off. And I think it got better when my jaw muscles weren't as tense anymore. So I feel there's a connection between my jaw/ear & the symptoms I have.

And no my MD is not an ENT. I already had a test done on my TMJ last June with an oral surgeon & they said I'm not a candidate for surgery & that my joint looked fine. So pretty much since than I've been completely clueless on where to go from there.

Have you been checked for any allergies?I have a milk allergy.Without dairy in my diet,i feel less inflammation.I have had to use a neti pot for several yrs to really get any of the thick mucous out of my sinus'.I also take over the counter allergy meds, and occassionaly prescription nasal sprays.I have tmj and the added pressure has been pretty unbearable. Its only been about 3 months that im dairy free but I believe I am producing less mucous.Hopefully it will return to relatively normal at some point.Just something to check out.

I might go for allergy testing next week possibly. I still am getting those clicking/popping/grating sounds that won't go away though. So I keep thinking it's something with my TMJ. I've been on anti-biotics, allergy medicine & nasal spray for the past week & it hasn't done anything for my symptoms really. He thought it was an eustachian tube problem. It's possible it is, but it's not doing anything for me. He said he's going to send me for a sinus & ear MRI if it don't work. As well as a hearing test. And I might possibly get a TMJ MRI too. I still wonder though if it's a muscular problem or something, but if it was something with my muscles I'd think I would have really bad pain. But I only get ear pain once in awhile, but nothing severe. But this problem is still affecting my life a lot.
