    TMJ Arthrocentesis Surgery

So, I'm scheduled to get the Arthrocentesis procedure to get rid/help my TMJ. I've had TMJ for almost 2 years now and i can't eat anything, theres always constant pain and i cant open my mouth more than 2 finger widths. Now, before you ask, yes I have tried everything! I've done muscle relaxers and other medication, physical therapy, the mouth splint thing, nothing has worked at all. I met with a TMJ surgeon/specialist and this surgery seems to be about my only option left. I was wondering if there was anyone who's done the Arthrocentesis who can give me some advice? Im honestly scared to get it done..does it hurt? What should I expect? Please and Thank you

    Re: TMJ Arthrocentesis Surgery

sorry to hear about your tmj. I had an arthrocentesis done a year ago. I was put under local anaesthetic so I was out the whole time. I didn't have pain until the anaesthetic wore of but u was given medication to help with the pain. The pain isn't horrible. The arthrocentesis didn't work for me but its worth a try as its one of the least invasive surgeries.
Good luck with it and hope it helps with the TMJ

I had arthocentisis too - this is the first step in TMJ surgery. I was under a general anesthetic. The surgeon made 2 tiny holes in front of my right ear (no scarring), he goes in with microspic instruments attached to a camera that magnifies everything (from what I understand), he washed out the joint with water solution - apparently imflammation can build up and that causes pain so they want to get all of the bad stuff out (my overly simplistic explanation); he gave me a cortisone; he also removed adhesions from the disc - the disc if it doesn't move can form scar tissue or adhesions which can cause it to be sticky and inhibit its movement; he then open and stretched my jaw while I was under.

It was day surgery. I had a compression bandage for the night and my head was wrapped like a mummy for the day of and night of the surgery; I was able to remove my dressings the next day. I had two small stiches where they closed the holes - which were removed in a weeks time; the pain wasn't too bad; I was told to stretch my jaw (open as wide as possible) the next day and every day afterwards, several times a day.

Unfortunately it didn't help me; but it has helped others and it is minimally invasive surgery.

I had one minor complication - the nerves affecting my right eye got irritated and I trouble closing it and blinking - it resolved itself over the weekend; wore and eye patch at night.
