Can an orthotic made by Neuro Dentist really help?

Hi! I'm at my wits end with my TMD. I'm looking for insight into treatment options. Has anyone had any experience using a custom orthotic made by a neuromuscular dentist? Good or bad, I need some guidance. It seems to be a long and expensive process, and I'm stressing over making the decision. I welcome all input! Thank you!

I've never had one from a neuromuscular dentist but I've had one from an "occlusion" specialist. It did not help but made it worse even. Looking back, it's because the splint blocked my normal jaw movement when my posture changed from different activities e.g. staying upright, lying down, lying on the side, etc. Your posture definitely affects your jaw position, and to be comfortable your jaw must be able to move freely in its natural path.

TMJD is not a disease but rather a collection of symptoms from your jaw muscles being out of balance. You should go back to the root cause of why your jaw muscles are out of balance and try to fix that.

There is no easy answer for you.

It really depends on the individual dentist's training and treatment approach. There are many different types of splints and the skills of the dentists in fitting the splint really differ. I speak from experience on this. I've had splints that were OK, a couple that caused me horrible pain, and finally a couple really good ones.

My most recent dentist is highly trained in treating TMJD and really understands the function of the bite. I had a daytime lower mandibular repositioning splint and a sleep splint that held my jaw in a forward position at night (which was one of my issues). For me, the splint treatment was very successful. I didn't use the splint alone though. I had some ultrasound treatments and worked with a PT with manual neck therapy and oral trigger point work. There is always a muscular component to the TMJD and those muscles need to be brought out of spasm while you are physically finding your better/correct bite position. I don't know very many people who had success with splint alone.
