    Live kidney donation. advice please!

I am 23 and my friend is in kidney failure. He has already had a deceased donor kidney which lasted ten years, this has now failed and he is on dialysis. I have started testing to be a live donor and I am a blood and tissue match. But doctors have been unclear on what the next steps of testing will be. Has anyone been through this that has any advice? I am also struggling with worries about how it may impact my health long term especially if I later in life choose to have children. Any advice is much appreciated, thank you!

I think its wonderful that you are considering kidney donation for your friend!

This will not impact your ability to have children in any way....the risks are only if you develop kidney disease, you will not have a second kidney to rely on- the risks are low, but they do exist.

You should be speaking with the doctor who is testing you about risks. Just because you are a blood and tissue match does not qualify you for the entire process; there are many stages to go through and the doctor doing the testing should be explaining this, along with the risks to you.

Let us know what happens and good luck!
