Stopping birth control pills....

My husband and I have decided that we would like to start trying to have children very soon. I currently take birth control pills. Is it safe to start trying right after I stop taking them or should we wait for a little while?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Stopping birth control pills....

My doctor told us to wait about 3 months before ttc but I've heard others have been told that it doesn't matter...they can start right away! You may want to consult your doctors opinion.

I have also heard the 3 month thing b/c it gives your body time to regulate hormones. It probably depends on how long you have been on BCPs. I would think that the longer you've been in on them, the more time you would need. Everyone is different though. At the very least, you may want to have once cycle without being on the pill.

I believe the reason drs and midwives tell you to wait is because your cycles may be irregular, and they wouldn't be able to calculate when the baby is due.It mentions that on the information in my box of birth control pills.

I don't think it would hurt to try right after going off the pill. The most that could happen is you wouldn't get pregnant right away. Getting pregnant just after coming off the pill shouldn't hurt the baby; think of all the women who accidently get pregnant while on the pill and have healthy babies.

P.S. My doctor says it doesn't matter.

Ditto on what marciajoy said. My doctor also said you can start trying right away, but you may not be successful. You hormones can take awhile to get back to normal, and you just may not be able to conceive for awhile because of that. Or you may get pregnant the first month (I wish!!).

I've also heard that in some cases, right after a woman goes off birth control pills, she will have a period of super-fertility. It's not guaranteed that this will happen to you, but why waste the chance?
