    Kidney Failure - worried family!

    Hi Everyone,

Really worried child here in relation to my mums healthcare treatment & current condition.

Mum has been in a hospital setting now for 18 weeks dealing with initially food poisoning, that in turn manifested into septicemia in the blood - this got very very serious and we almost lost mum, thankfully she recovered but then contracted stomach ulcers coupled with a cyst on the kidney - this resulted in quite heavy doses of dialysis.

The cyst & ulcers were both operated on and again we felt things were moving forward as infection markers were coming down & dialysis was eventually stopped.

Mum then took some further infections which manifested as a large abscess on her kidney (note mum only has one kidney) with the kidney function dropping to 10%, so then again a heavy dose of antibiotics to try and deal with the infection and after a number of weeks things stabilised again with some light physio taking place to attempt walking again…

However we’re now back to square 1 again as mum ran a fever overnight of 40c, has a large abscess on her kidney & is now being prepared for dialysis… but this time we’ve 18 weeks of muscle waste to contend with, with the consultant stating she’s concerned about mums fragility in order to carry out any operation…

The prescribed course of action for the next week is to continue with heavy antibiotics & dialysis to see how the kidney reacts but what we could bring ourselves to ask were:

    1) After the week is over and there is no improvement is that it?

    2) Can the kidney remain in the body with dialysis carried out for the next number of years mindful that life expectancy is reduced.

We’re just pulling our hair out trying to prepare ourselves for whatever lies down the track but the doctors are asking us to concentrate on the next week - we feel this is nieve and we’re better to prepare for whatever is coming down the tracks - we just don’t know what that is!!!

Any feedback/comments/experience will be so so much appreciated

    1) After the week is over and there's no improvement, it's unlikely there will be improvement by continuing. So that approach will likely come to an end.

    2) Can the kidney remain in the body with dialysis carried out for the next number of years mindful that life expectancy is reduced.

Yes, with kidney function at 10%, it's likely that will be the plan because she may not be strong enough to withstand or recover from an operation.

Hi John - you’d think the kidney would remain in & dialysis would continue as an outpatient - albeit life expectancy reduced significantly.

    Hi,

My aunt had kidney failure years ago. She was taking 5 medications and one was to keep her cancer from coming back as she was in remission. When she started on dialysis I'm pretty sure she was not able to take any of those medications because all those medications would accumulate in her system and become toxic. So without the drug that was supposed to keep her cancer from coming back, her brain cancer came back and they were not able to operate on her because she wouldn't have been able to survive an operation.
    She was 89.

My cousin also died of kidney failure and had multiple health issues. The choices got more and more difficult as time went on. Sometimes it gets so complex that it's difficult to tell what's causing what and what should done. Then it gets to the point where you run out of options. She finally said, "It's time for me to go." And she went to hospice where she only lived a few more days. She was 88.

I read that by around age 80 the average person is at stage 2 kidney disease, which is considered mild because there are 5 stages. Stage 5 is kidney failure. But with a careful diet and lifestyle in general, the kidneys can repair themselves if caught early, like stage 2 or 3.

So the older we get the more careful we need to be.
