What to expect at a urologist visit?

Ok, here is my long story. About two weeks ago I went to the dr. with what I thought was a UTI since the symptoms matched( Burning sensation and blood in the urine). Urine test came back negative, the dr. sent it for culturing, came back negative. A week later I started having the same symptoms, and I was peeing straight blood for a few days. I went to the dr. today, did another urine test, came back negative again, it was sent for culturing again. The dr. also checked my uterus to make sure that the blood is not coming from there. Finally she sugested that I go see a urologist. Now, that scares me to death, because I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone want to share some of their experiences? Please, I really need some support.

Re: What to expect at a urologist visit?

I was in the same situation as you when I was told i need to see a Urologist. Im such a scardy cat!

Im from the UK so if you are somewhere else in the world it might be slighty different...

With my appointments i went and spoke to the specialist and explained all my problems and symptoms. I had blood and urine tests, Xrays of my kidneys and bladdder and also an IVP/IVU which is a series of xrays. With an IVP/IVU i was inject with a dye that had iodine in it, it felt a bit funny but is nothing to worry about, had more xrays and then went home feeling fine. Im waiting for my results now so fingers crossed!

I have not had a cystoctomy (sp?) yet, but i might need one. Ive heard that it isnt a very pleasent procedure but it is fairly quick and painless.

Hope this has helped, you'll be fine!

Re: What to expect at a urologist visit?

Hi alexioda~
I just posted about my cystoscopy,,,but i will repeat it b/c i think you need to know what is wrong with you. My symptoms were excessive urination,,i got up 10 times a nite to pee. a FULL feeling in my bladder ALL the time, & sex was painful b/c if my bladder feels full,,there was a lot of preasure on it during sex.
My gyno sent me to a urologist,,,he was VERY quick & said it may sting a bit...he inserted a camera into the urethra & filmed the bladder wall,,(i could see it on the TV) he said there was small traces of blood & some red sores.
It was uncomfortable YES,,,but i could tolerate it. I had NO pain releif or numbing i suggest you take some tyl#3 before, or if you are really nervous, something stronger?
The next few times i pee'd it stung,,,but really NOT that bad. the next day i was fine.
The next wk he said i had Cystitis.
I am now taking meds for it.& am making changes in my diet...cutting down on spicy/acidic food, caffiene, etc...

Good luck!~~
