I cut myself with a soda can...

    Hi everyone
I think that I'm just being too worrisome, but... earlier, I accidentally cut the tip of my tongue along the opening of a soda can. And now I'm letting paranoia get the best of me, because I'm worried that there might have been bacteria or something on the can. Should I be worried about tetanus or anything?

i've done that before and i'm ok. how badly did you cut your tongue? is it forked now like a snakes tongue ? i'm sure it will be ok. if you start feeling nauseous or your jaw starts getting stiff, or you get a fever, then you should be concerned. but be careful, if you get too nervous about that stuff, you can actually make your body start to do it just by thinking about it (the mind is incredibly powerful).

as far as tetanus is concerned, have you ever received the vaccine? supposedly it is good for 5-10 years (depending on when you got it, different batches, etc.)

unless you have an already compromised immune system from hepatitis, HIV, pneumonia, etc., any bacteria that may or may not have been on the can will not do anything, unless you pulled the can out of a trash can, an out house, something filthy. but a regular, normal soda can will be fine. there is bacteria everywhere, some of it is good, some of it is not so good. but our bodies are incredibly strong and were designed to heal themselves (if you get a cut, it scabs over, if you break a bone, it will mend itself, etc.) and your body will take care of any possible bacteria that may have been on the can.

most likely, the only bacteria on it was your own, which you are immune to since you live with it every day!

most likely there's nothing to worry about and you'll be fine.
if you haven't had a tetanus booster in the last 10 years, you may want to consider getting one just in case.
i had a cut that worried me a couple months ago and i had the booster because it had been over 10 years for me. the shot itself was painless but my arm was sore for 2 or 3 days.
    good luck.

Unless you'd just fished the can of soda out of a pile of horse poop, there's nothing at all to worry about. Tetanus is exceedingly rare and not nearly as serious (ie fatal) as we are all made to believe.

if a wound bleeds, you don't need to worry about tetanus. tetanus
can only live in an anaerobic environment. most cases of tetanus in the U.S. are in the elderly because they have poor circulation and don't bleed readily.
cases of tetanus (US) in 2004: 9 cases up to july 2, 2005: 11
