Question Lifelong symptoms reduced by taking potassium. Would appreciate your theories!

Im very interested in your theories for my undiagnosed condition.

Im a 30 year old male that has suffered from a long list of chronic severe symptoms for most of my life. Dozens of specialists consultations and different tests and treatments have yielded no results.

Recently, I tried a potassium gluconate supplement. I experienced rapid and dramatic reduction in all of my symptoms. This effect has been repeatable for 2 months. If I stop the supplementation, the symptoms return within a day.

    Severe, chronic symptoms improved:

    Asthma and respiratory issues.
    Nasal congestion.
    Constipation.
    Headaches.
    Muscle cramping, weakness and pain.
    Insomnia.
    Palpitations.

Ive also suffered from unexplained osteoporosis since my twenties.

It would be life-changing to finally know what has caused me so much suffering throughout my life. This potassium effect is my first piece of evidence that might help me solve the mystery. I would appreciate any opinions and theories!

Im booked to see an endocrinologist. Suggestions of other recommended specialists are welcome. Im taking 400mg to 800mg of potassium gluconate per day. I understand that this is within a safe dosage range. Previous years pathology show low but not out-of-range serum potassium levels.

    Thanks! |||

    Dear fortyx,

Your body's reaction to the potassium experiment demonstrates the necessity of getting nutrients from food sources and the importance of eating a balanced diet. Nutrients all work together to provide health.

Foods that contain more potassium than bananas are sweet potatoes, white potatoes, watermelon, frozen spinach, beets and butternut squash. But potassium is just one necessary nutrient.

We need to eat a varied and balanced diet in order to be healthy.
Unfortunately substances are broadly sold now rather than to teach proper eating habits. Most people myself included want quick fixes.

Sadly, in this age of fast, pre-prepared food, doctors in general get very little education about nutrition or balanced diets. One young doctor even told me that what we eat doesn't make any difference. Yes, he really said it.

I can't give you an answer but I can give you encouragement. I have recently started to watch my vitamin and mineral intake and realised I am quite deficient in some areas. It sounds like you have a set of symptoms that are solved by one supplement which is pretty amazing but I guess it signals that your particular body chemistry requires potassium in larger quantities than it was previously getting.

Good luck to you and I'm glad you have found a solution to what sounds like a hard-to-diagnose issue.
