Really? Never heard that rule before. What country are you in?
That is actually NOT true for much of the world.
Most people just go to the health food or vitamin shop, and ask for guidance from the in-house health professional (naturopath or herbalist) on duty
You don't need to consult a doctor at all - although if you are taking other prescribed medication - it is prudent to do so in case of interactions.
A naturopath would be a better choice of professionals to prescribe supplements, as they are extremely knowledgeable on the subject
And as long as you stick to the RDA (Recommend Daily Allowance) and follow the instructions label, you will be pretty safe.
You can only hurt yourself if you exceed the dosage or take for a prolonged period without a break, or you have an interaction.
