Question flax seed oil vs ground

    Hi all,

Can anyone help on what the difference between flax seed oil and ground is? I'm vegetarian (no meat/fish/very little dairy) & am thinking about taking it for health & skin benefits. I take nature's way dim plus for estrogen balance. If the only difference between the oil or the ground is that the ground helps w/bowels, I eat enough fiber etc and don't have problems in that area.
Also, I read that flax seed has it's own estrogen so I don't know if taking the dim plus would be a good combo.

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Re: flax seed oil vs ground

    Hello,

Ground flax seeds all have lignans (which are a type of phytoestrogen, responsible for helping to balance estrogen levels). However, not all flax seed oils contain lignans, some brands remove the lignans during the process. So if you are taking the oil, make sure you buy a brand that contains lignans.

Ultimately, the choice between oil and ground flax is a personal preference. In my opinion, the ground flax tastes much better than the oil does. My doc has me taking 3 tablespoons of ground flax daily (among other things to balance out hormones). Also, they phytoestrogens have a unique ability to either raise or lower the estrogen levels in the body, depending on what it needs, so you shouldn't have any problems taking it with your other supplement.

    Good Luck!

    Shanna

Thanks for your advice. Have you ever tried fish oil ? From what I've read it sounds like it would be be overkill to take both. I'm vegetarian for personal reasons so it would not bother me to take fish oil.

I have taken fish oil but my ND told me taking 3 tablespoons of ground flax daily has much more omega-3s than taking 3 fish oil capsules daily.
