Fish oil supplement

I went to Whole Foods (like Trader Joe) and spoke to the vitamin "specialist" about taking a fish oil supplement. She showed me their highest quality supplements and I got some. I liked everything positive that I read about taking the supplement but recently I've heard that it's actually not so healthy for you.

What is your opinion? Has anyone come across some good reading or good information about it?

I don't eat sea food...so I thought the supplement would be good.

Re: Fish oil supplement

I take enough of the fish oil supplements to get 3-4 grams of the omega-3's per day. You have to get more than 3-4 grams of fish oil to accomplish that, though, because only some of the oil in the pill is omega-3. The highest pills I've got are around 70% omega-3's. With a prescription I believe you can get a higher percentage, but I just take one more pill or another teaspoon of the oil itself. I also have a couple of tablespoons of ground flax seed for the alpha-linolenic acid. Obviously I believe in this family of supplements/foods, partly for the health benefits, partly for bipolar disorder.

Re: Fish oil supplement

Hi, I'm learning about omega 3's right now. Most of the U.S. population is deficient in omega 3. Omega 3 and Omega 6 both compete for the same enzyme. The US polulation eats way too much omega 6 because it is included in all prepackaged food and fed to most all of our cows and chicken. This, along with the fact that nobody eats fish here we all end up with deficiencies.

It is a very important fat. Most of what you read about it is true. There are a lot of dubious health claims simply beacuse there have been thousands of studies on it recently. These manufacturers use one positive study and rely on it as a fact and that can be misleading.

Many pscychiatrist are recomending it to their patients. My dad is taking it in prescription form because he has heart problems. It obvioulsy is great for pscychiatric and heart health. I'm not allowed to mention studies found my textbooks on this board. But I can tell you that recent knowlegde about omega 3 is reliable enough to be included in various textbooks around the nation.

Re: Fish oil supplement

I forgot to mention, make sure that you are taking a pure (free from mercury and other toxins) and stable form (fish oil rancidity can cause oxidation of healthy cells).
