    vitamin c

How much should someone take in any given 24 hour day?
Would it be how much stress the bodies under?
Would it be better to take 3-4 different times daily or all at once?
Would it be better to take in pill form or crystal form?
Or is supplementing with vitamin c just a waste of money?
    Thanks for any help!!!

I would not exaggerate. For daily use, I would not exceed 500 mg.
If you can take it in divided portion, e.g. 2 times 250 mg, that would be better.
    But that isn't always practical.
Don't bother with time-release, I read research that it is not as useful as non time-release.

A pill form will do, no problem.

The jury is still out whether taking vitamins/minerals are a waste of money or not. It's a decision you have to make for yourself.

I regularly take 3000 mg over three doses daily. If I feel a scratchy/sore throat coming on, I'll take 1000 mg every hour for 8-10 hours. There is no bioavailability difference from pill to powder form, but there is a huge spike in bioavailability if taking a liposomal form.

Your intestinal system saturates its cellular transport at 1000 mg (with food, or on a full stomach). Therefore, its best to spread out your daily intake.

Quality whole foods trump vitamins, however vitamins from whole food sources trump the rock minerals you buy at the local store.

I would argue that is only because the studies done are always on poor quality vitamins and minerals that are 100% inorganic junk. If your body can only absorb about 3% of the dosage you think you are getting, how beneficial can it be?

    Hi,
Zubbs1, How much vitamin c have you consumed in a 24 hr period?
I'm like you, take anywhere between 3-6grams a day. More when feeling run down. Take it in sodium ascorbate form only. Taken as much as 100 grams in 24 hrs when really run down.

As far as I know there has never been any study showing any benefit to taking Vitamin C. All of the studies are not going to have poor quality vitamins and if there was any benefit, there should have been at least a hint of it somewhere, especially in the studies with really high doses.

I am getting 60mg/day in my multivitamin.

Do any of you find that it helps when you have a scratchy throat? When I was younger I would always take a lot of vitamin C when I wasn't feeling well but it didn't seem to make any difference (but nowhere near the doses that you have mentioned). I did start taking zinc and had a dramatically reduced length of a cold that usually puts me out for a week but I felt well after 1-2 days.

I would recommend 1000 mg. taken several times throughout the day. I'd say take 1 250 mg. tablet with juice at breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime.

Vitamin C isn't stored in the body and flushes out quickly.

1000mg a day of vitamin c is about the right amount.
