    Losing water vs. fat...

Does your body shrink more when you lose more fat than water?

    Re: Losing water vs. fat...

You 'shrink' when you occupy less space than you did previously. Some of this is water, some of this is fat, some this could be lean mass. When you burn body fat you don't suddenly 'lose fat'. Your fat cells become depleted of their contents, which are fat, water and some hormones. As you lose the fat from the cells your body attempts to replace the fat with water, to keep them the same size. Eventually the cells release the water, which is why you can wake up one morning and suddenly have lost 2 lbs and why everyone tells you it's water weight - most of it was.

Fat burning doesn't happen in spurts, fits and stops, like weight loss does, Those fits and starts you see reflected on the scale are your body's failed attempts to keep everything exactly as it was.

To answer your question exactly, you would shrink approximately 10% more if if you lost just fat as opposed to just water. Fat has a density of about 0.9 g/cc while water has a density of 1.0 g/cc. Muscle on the other hand has a density of about 1.1 g/cc, making it approximately 22% more dense than fat (which is why you can lose fat, gain muscle, weigh the same but be smaller)
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.
