Long ago I went on a diet called the McDougall plan, which is a low protein, low fat, high unrefined carbohydrate, vegetarian diet. I got my weight down and I maintained it for a number of years by continuing to eat the same way most of the time. This past year I have gained 30 pounds because of stress due to the illness of one of our children, I am afraid I respond to stress and depression by eating chocolate. The doctor who was treating him said that he needed a lot of protein, so I have been cooking a lot of meat, which did not help me at all. I really have to get back on this diet again.

The advantages of this diet are that there are no calorie limits, only food type restictions so you can eat all you want, and not just of carrots and lettice, and you don't have to keep track of how much you eat of each item, etc. You can have all the potatoes and whole grained rice you want, (but you have to learn to eat them without a bunch of fat on them). Because of this it is easier to stick to the diet, because you don't feel hungry all the time like you do on a lot of diets. Once you get into it you can eat this way for years and keep your weight down and feel good and eat all you want. You do have to avoid bread while you are losing weight though, for the best results.

If anyone is interested there are several books by John McDougall that you probably can find in your library, plus a few other authors have similar books with recipes, such as Gabe Mirkin's "Fat Free Flavor Full" which has a number of recipes that I really love. There are some others that I can't remember right now. Mirkin allows some seafood on his diet.

John McDougall appears to be a little stuck on himself, I think that is why he named his plan after himself, but don't let that make you think his plan isn't good. He has a rivalry going with the person who wrote " The Zone." or at least he did in the past. The person who wrote "The Zone." seems to be stuck on himself, too, and since they have opposite plans, the Zone is a high protein, calorie restricted diet, they used to be at each other's throats, more or less. Personally, I know the Zone plan would not work for me, but some people like it. I feel great on the low protein diet and it is the only way I can keep my weight down where I want it.

Dr. McDougall is a heart specialist, I believe. His plan is much like that of Dr. Dean Ornish's. They are both based on very low fat, natural foods. "The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart uses a pure vegetarian diet bbased around starches with the addition of vegetables and limited amounts of fruits."

Kime, thank you for your post. If I remember correctly, didn't Dr. McDougall have a stroke at a very young age and have a family history of heart problems? His was a very inspiring story. Thanks for sharing you successes. I hope your child is better. Good luck to you.
