How do you know if your metabolism speeds up over time of diet and exercising?

Everything about metabolism confuses me... What is it? What does it have to do with weightloss?

How long of diet and exercise does one have to do to speed it up?

I think of metabolism as the speed at which my body is running. If it's slow then I feel sluggish, move slow, no energy, have foggy thinking, etc. I can always tell when it speeds up because I have more energy which makes me able to be more active, think clearer and just feel better all around.
