Post Big clots? Consider endometrial balloon ablation

A few years ago I had heavy clots with my period -- no cramps or pain to speak of but I could not go out shopping even without worrying that I would have an "accident".

While many doctors would go straight to a hysterectomy, my gyno suggested balloon ablation. The procedure is very easy to tolerate. Mine was done as an outpatient in the hospital and I went to work the next day. Some gynos do it in their clinics I believe. Some gynos don't believe in it and won't offer it as an option -- cynical me says that it is much less work and $$$ than a hysterectomy!

Balloon ablation is this: I was fully anesthetized but it could be done with epidural. They insert a "balloon" into your uterus and fill it with hot water (I don't know how hot but must be very hot, I guess). This heat cauterizes or destroys all the endometrial tissue that causes the monthly buildup. Thus, NO MORE PERIODS but you still have your all your reproductive system and there are no hormonal side effects. According to my doctor, about 85% of women have experienced either no more periods at all or very manageable periods. It will likely cause sterility just as a hysterectomy would so is not an option if you want children.

My gyno has done this procedure many many times and goes annually to third world countries to teach this procedure since it's so much easier than the surgery. Not for everyone but for those of us it has helped --- it's a godsend. I still had periods afterward but no more chunks of liver and the associated anemia.
