Post Missing Periods

Hi everyone.

I'm 35 years old and I haven't had a period in about 9 months. I started having a really bad time with my periods, meaning intense severe mood swings. I just assumed that it was changing because I'm getting older. I'm already on an antidepressant for depression. Anyway they got so bad they started causing me problems at work. So for three months in a row I took my pills back to back (instead of taking the pill for 21 days and stopping for a week). As a result I skipped a couple of periods. Then I went to my doctor to see if changing birth control pills would help. That was in February. Anyway, I switched from Triphasil to LoEstrin. I've been taking them correctly and I still haven't had a period. My friends say I should go back to the Dr, but I don't want to because I'm afraid of my periods returning.

Can anyone relate?

Definitely see your doctor. I doubt there is anything seriously wrong, but if pregnancy is ruled out; chances are there is a hormone imbalance.

I know periods are no fun, believe me; but it's probably better to get one when you expect it than wondering when and if you'll get one.

Check with the doc, that's about all you can do.

It does sound like a hormone imbalance. You might want to pick up the book "Screaming to be Heard..Hormonal Connections Women Suspect and Doctors Still Ignore" by Dr. Elizabeth Vliet (2001). You should be able to find it at your library. There are questionnaires in the back and also has LOTS of great information in it. I started having hormone/cycle problems at around age 27. If you suspect you have hormonal problems, ask your doctor for tests. Dr. Vliet's 1st book saved my life. I am now almost 39 and have experienced menopausal symptoms due to a failed pituitary for the last 11 years. I was also diagnosed with osteoporosis at the age of 31 by Dr. Vliet. Had it not been for her, it would not have been caught for a very long time. Good luck.

Hi Trainwreck,

Can you tell me more? Our local library isn't very good, but I will check for the book. I had my leg break mysteriously last Fall while I was flying a kite. Now I have this random bleeding for no reason. My doctor always compare me to young girls, but I am 26 and I have had my period for 14 years so it's not like my body is simply growing up. I also have heard that my bleeding is a lot like older women. But, I haven't found anyone else with bleeding like mine at my age. I asked for a hormone test and for a bone density test and my doctors thought it was funny. I am looking for a new doctor right, now and it would be nice to find a specialist, but I don't know what is wrong so I don't know what kind of specialist.
Total abdominal hysterectomy at age 26 due to abnormal bleeding. Kept ovaries.
