Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

I was diagnosed with a right ovarian cyst (1mm) three months ago. I had many symptoms of pelvic pain, lower/upper back pain, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue. This cyst disappeared (along with the symptoms for a month or so) with one to show up on my left ovary (shown by transvaginal ultrasound). Same symptoms this time, but the cyst is a little bigger (2mm).

I read many places that cysts normally DON'T cause symptoms, yet I'm having many. My GP says this is just the way it is with me because I do have a "sensitive" stomach. I am going to see her again today and say I'm not sure the ovarian cyst is causing my symptoms and will ask for a referral to a gynecologist.

Do any of you out there have symptoms such as mine with your ovarian cysts? I'm worried it may be something more severe.

Thanks for any replies to ease my mind!

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

My wife is having the same exact symptoms. Sometimes it's back pain, sometimes stomach ache, it changes. Our PCP just said the transvaginal ultrasound came back and shows ovarian cysts that are starting to "break down" or something like that. She's had a little bit of discharge she said, that would be explained by the cysts. She's had blood in her stool for years that was attribute to hemorroids about 9 years ago after a colonoscopy.

OBGYN and GI specialist in about 2 weeks to get their opinion.

Let me know what your docs find out and I'll do the same!

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Hi, Hallmatt:

Thanks for your reply. Well, if you were to have asked me just yesterday how things were going, I would say not so good...nausea, and bad gas! Today (and it's mid-afternoon), I feel great! Could it be that the cyst ruptured? Possibly, but I don't know. What a difference. I've felt lousy for the last month. Maybe my doctor was right I am beginning to believe. She is usually on target with her diagnoses, so the cyst was probably causing my symptoms.

I refuse to go back on birth control pills, which are known to prevent ovarian cysts, because the pill gives me migraines. The migraines are now under control with Neurontin.

I guess it will be touch and go to see if another cyst develops. If I start up again with the same symptoms, I'll know what it is. I have a follow up ultrasound scheduled for the end of April.

Take care and let me know what the specialist says about your wife. I am not planning to go to one because I believe my doctor knew the cause of my pain.

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Hi. I am 24 and about to undergo a laparoscopy for a very large ovarian cyst that has probably been caused by endometrioma of the ovary. I do have pelvic pain, back pain, leg pain, gas pain and bowel pain which is all associated with the big mass on my left ovary. I would suggest because you are symptomatic that you definitely need further evaluation. Pain in itself is a sign that further treatment is needed.

Sorry, I didn't read your last post. I was going to tell you however that you do not need to take birth control to prevent ovarian cysts. There are other nutritional means by keeping them at bay. You might read a nutritional or holistic medicine sight to see how you might improve your diet.

Hallmatt:

Did your wife see the specialist? What was the outcome?

I'm back to feeling crummy again! Bummer! I have a doctor's visit tomorrow at which time I'll discuss my feelings with her.

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Sorry for the late reply.

OBGYN ordered an IVP to look for blockages in the urinary tract that might explain the microscopic blood in her urine. The IVP showed a dark spot in the left renal pelvis (funnel area between kidney and ureter). We were scared that the analysis was that it could be a tumor, stone, etc.

Family Dr then ordered a CT scan to substantiate the findings, along with another blood and urine test. Blood test was normal, urine test still showed trace blood. CT scan came back saying "there's a question of a small mass in the left renal pelvis, if real this could be a stone or a tumor." The guy who did the CT scan had previous knowledge of the IVP X-ray so he was of course looking for something there.

Urologist looked at both. She said that the CT scan wasn't all that useful, but the X-ray did show a shadowy area which often indicates a small mass. Based on where it was located, she said if there was anything there it was almost definitely transitional cell carcinoma, but it's entirely possible that she would look up there and see nothing if we scheduled an exam. She said that it probably wouldn't be a stone because this type of stone was almost always caused by HIV drugs and my wife is definitely not taking drugs like that.

Another urine sample was taken. Still trace blood. 5 days later the cytology report came back normal so they didn't find any cancer cells.

29yo female with a brief history of smoking, no family history of kidney cancer. Only troubling signs were microscopic blood in urine, and a slightly suspicious but inconclusive IVP. But still, very scary. We read up and found that it would probably mean kidney removal because she was young and they would want to be more confident about curing her.

We met with another Urologist the day before the exam. He recommended that we continue with the exam even though it was slightly invasive. He said that a few of the slides looked a little suspicious, but others looked like it could be a passing vessel like an artery which was leaning against the renal pelvis causing some spots to be darker. That was comforting to know what the other urologist meant by "it could be nothing." She meant that it could be something external and unrelated. He said that if it was a tumor, the size was small and the normal cytology report meant that it would likely be a less aggressive tumor. And as always, he clarified saying "That is, IF it is cancer which is yet to be seen."

The exam was on Friday. Since they were going up the ureter with a scope, she had to be under anestesia. The Dr told us it was not intubation like I had for my gallbladder, she would be breathing on her own. After an hour, the urologist called me out to the hall. She said that she didn't find anything at all! She only used a small stent and it might even fall out on it's own.

So good news! We'll be meeting with her again this week to just go over the results and she what else she thinks. The other urologist told us that about 1/3 of all microscopic hematuria can't be explained.

We'll probably go back to the OBGYN to see what he thinks about the cysts. After the procedure, my wife is sure that he back pain and lower abdominal pain is NOT kidney related, it's much lower than what she feels now. Most doctors seem to be unconvinced that ovarian cysts can cause pain, but all I ever read about is women who have pain that is traced back to the cysts. Our OBGYN said one might have ruptured.

As an uneducated doctor, I am wondering if the trace blood might be linked to the ovarian cysts. I've read that trace blood in urine can be caused by other things such as lingering from a cycle. So it doesn't seem like a far reach that a problematic ovarian cyst could do the same thing.

Hallmatt:

What an ordeal you and your wife have gone through! I truly hope the outcome is positive. At least you're having everything checked out, which is the best thing to do. Keep us posted. I'm pretty much convinced my pains are because of the cysts, however small.

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Hi

I also have had ovarian cysts which are less than a cm so they never want to do further exam. However, as I was totally stressing last Nov and having lots of wierd symptoms for months, they did the reg ultrasound (not vaginal), again said a 1 cm cyst, then I go CT of abdomen (they thought I might have appendicitis) about 2 days later and all looked ok. There was some fluid in area near ovary which was probably ruptured cyst they said and some in uterus. They said this was not very unusual. I also got CA 125 test and was normal. I am still having symptoms more on than off and trying to ignore tham but I am really freaking out that I may have cancer. I am going in this week to make them figure out what is wrong with me. I have had gas and bowel probs for a long time (years on and off), and now this right SI joint pain and leg discomfort. I did have femoral hernia repair in Dec but I still have symptoms. I want a vag ultrasound and lap. I do work in a radiation oncol center and doc there said that the 3 tests I had were not conclusive alone but were a good indicator together. I have stress incontinence as well which has been getting gradually worse since my first was born 12 yeqars ago. I am 42. I also have pain with sex. I did have colonoscopy last year as well. Sorry to drag on but this is absolutely driving me nuts. Hope yours turns out ok. I am ready to get lap to check my insides out. My husband is doc and thinks I have gone nuts. He does not know how I feel. Do you think anxiety could do a lot of this?

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Hi, Sharon:

I have good days and not such good days. I am trusting my doctor (who I think is very thorough and well-trained) to know there is nothing more to worry about. Does it always have to be something serious when we feel crummy? Maybe not. I'm waiting it out.

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Hi, Sharon:

How are you doing these days? I just read back to older posts and came across yours and our exchange.

I am still suffering off and on from ovarian cysts and symptoms. This recent bout came with much nausea and abdominal/pelvic pain. I think the cyst burst because an ultrasound came out with no sign of any cysts. But, funny thing is my lower back pain continued after I think the cyst burst. I'm now on muscle relaxants and Vioxx for the pain.

What a major drag! I'm going to consult with a dietitian to see if there is anything I can eat or supplements I can take to prevent these cysts.

Take care.

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

Hi

Thanks for thinking of me. I had a lap in June and they drained a benign 6 cm cyst (they thought it was two cm). Incidentally in Oct prior I had a CT and they said it had ruptured then and this may have been a new one. I also had back pain for quite a while and just plain misery. i feel great now and hope it does not return. Lap was easy. I was playing tennis one week later. My friend had the nausea/vomiting with her symptoms and she ended up with endometriosis and needed a hysterectomy. She is feeling great now too. I did not have the nausea but did have a lot of heartburn. If it keeps up get the lap. Hope all goes well with you.

Re: Worried About (Ovarian Cyst) Symptoms...

[FONT=Comic Sans MS]Hi! I just went to my OB/GYN a couple of days ago. I too, had left side pain for a few months but just ignored it. I am going for a transvaginal sonogram on Monday. She is also requesting a pregnancy test just in case. I have had irregular periods which I normally don't do either. I have pain in my lower left side which has been just awful.

The GYN did the internal exam and felt "tenderness" and "fullness". Pretty sure I have a cyst. Never had one before. Kind of scared. You are not alone either. Please keep me updated.

My pain will linger and then go away and then come back especially after intimacy.
