| Ladies advice needs - Fiancee has swelling of legs - getting her down - help?!
Ok, this is a question on behalf of my fiancee - whom I love more than anything - and I hate to see her down - so all and any advice would be so appreciatiated!
She is 25, quite active and is from quite a slim figured family - and before I suffer the wrath of all the ladies in here - I am totally fine with how she looks - no matter how she looks - she is beautiful to me.
While her weight has went up a little in he past few years - as is normal when entering mid 20's, lately (past 10 months) her legs have increased in size and even around the ankle, bone profile has become hard to discern. She loved to wear boots but now this is becoming very difficult due to this issue and she is very conscious of the problem. She has had countless visits to doctors here (who i have little faith in - the heart specialist she visited spent 5 minutes with her and then told her 'all women love to wear boots and shorts skirts - but that she had fat legs - and to get used to it'... yeah exactly!) - What could this be - she has very sensitive shins and bruises easily - and the bruises do not go away as quick as, say for me. The fatty tissue on the legs (which seems to be an over development of the normal tissue - it does not look very obvious apart from the build up) is not soft, and she says that sometimes when she wears a slight heel, it does nto swell quite as much.
Ladies - I am a genuine guy - I love her no matter what the wacky world of the human body brings to the fore - she is beautiful and amazing - but this is making her very concious of herself - and sometimes she is very down. In anycase - as most will agree - this is NOT normal - there has to be a reason - but its a mystery - and I would dearly appreciate your help. Sorry for the long post.

I'm not sure this is the same problem i had or not, but a few years age the inner side of my legs and around my ankle was a little swollen and I was told by my doctor that it's related to "salt" ! My body couldn't take the amount of salt I put in food so I reduced it and the swelling went away. But mine wasn't fat, just fake swelling of tissues.

Thats a possibility yeah - would that be a cause of the whole swelling in both her lower legs?

maybe she has bad veins?
I had a condition a while back called venus stasis ? sp?
the blood wasn't being pumped back up effectively. I was told to elevate my legs every day and get my feet up above my hips.

By the way, did you go for a blood test? If yes, any unusual signs?

As far as I know - and she would tell me otherwise if it was so - there were no unusual blood issues - but then again - health care here is awful - overpaid escapologists - very of them actually seem to spend any length of time seeing there patients and checking things out.
I will definitely suggest the salt issues - is there anything apart from simply cutting out salt that I could also suggest - something that combats the sodium perhaps?
Ladies - your help has been great so far - you have my thanks!

this might help to decide if its swelling. Have her cross her leggs at the ankle for like 10 minutes or more. After uncrossing them, is there an indentation in the shin from the other leg resting there? When my ankles are swollen I can push an indentaiton into them just by either pushing on them with a finger. Or when they are crossed like that I get a deffinate indentation from water retention. You will get a mark anyway ...but if there is swelling it will be much deeper into the skin. Of coarse it goes away after a few mintues.
I learned this when I was pregnant with my first baby. My ankles and lower legs would swell so much after being on my feet. The dr. would push on my ankles to see how much swelling i had.
If it is swelling and is excessive there could be something wrong. WHat has her regular Dr. said? Is her blood pressure usually ok?
Good Luck |

Again, there were no out of the ordinary test results - but I don't know how thorough the Doctors were (I have my doubts). I will suggest this for sure - and see what the results are.
She did mention water retention - how can this issue be resolved - what suggestions would you all have?
Thanks again!

There are pills that you start losing water ( by going to bathroom alot ) after taking them but they can be dangerous if taken without supervision of a doctor. This might be an alternative only if your doctor decides so.

Thanks she was on fluid tablets for a while prescribed by her Doctor but came off them her self as they didn't seem to be making any lasting difference.
Her legs are not as bad now but she is worried that the problem might come back again as bad as ever so is still seeing different doctors to find the cause.
All her tests have so far come back giving a clean bill of health so the mystery continues.

Limit salt, get more exercise, drink plenty of water (dehydration can cause the cells to hold on to excess water), raise her legs up with pillows, and have her take those water pills (diuretics) again. How is her heart, blood pressure, etc.? Look into buying those pressure stockings people wear when they travel to prevent leg swelling.

another thought ....is she on any type of hormones or Birth Controll pills?
I was having severe swelling in my legs, especially in the ankes and the doctors could not find anything wrong with me. I cut out salt, but I wasn't a big salt fan anyway and cutting the little salt I ate did not help. Elevating my legs in the evenings helped a little, but not much.
I quit my BC pills and within 3 weeks, the swelling was gone and has not returned.
