Ovarian cyst- CTscan AND MRI???

Well I had a US done a few weeks ago due to infertility. My fertility specialist said things looked "fairly normal" but she found something worrying on my right kidney. So I was sent off to a Urologist to have a CT scan done. Now the urologist is saying my kidney looks lik nothing more than a fatty bengin growth but he is worried about a mass/cyst on my ovary and wants me to go for another US and MRI. Wouldnt the CT scan show what the cyst is made of? Im really worried now.....

You poor thing...the doctors are passing you back and forth. An MRI will give those doctors a much better look at what is going on. A CT scan (I think) just shows a presence of something abnormal. To really know what this is, they may have to take a biopsy, unless it is a simple ovarian cyst...which is really common and can go away on its own. Try not to worry...are you feeling okay otherwise?

Re: Ovarian cyst- CTscan AND MRI???

I had a CT scan that showed something on my ovary. I was sent for a transvaginal ultrasound to get a better look. It was a cyst, but the Ct was unable to see it as well as the U/S. I would think the MRI would be very accurate too. Good luck.

Re: Ovarian cyst- CTscan AND MRI???

Thanks for the replys
I had a transvaginal ultrasound with my fertility consultant which is when they also scanned my kidney which found the abnormal kidney issue. I was then sent for a CT scan but becaue the wait was so long decided to go private (I live in the UK) which meant going to a urologist and being refered for a CT scan. That CT scan then showed something on my ovary. I know from the original ultrasound my fertility consultant said there was some sort of cyst but didnt really say much as she was mostly worried about the kidney issue. Of course now I am private and at a different hospital they now want to do extra test because they have picked up on the ovary issue which is fine because I prefer to know what is going on but as my fertility consultant didnt feel it was anything to worry about I am pretty relaxed.
As far as symptoms I did have a bit of pain off and on a couple of weeks ago (around time of CT scan) but nothing really bad. Felt more like a pulled muscle really low on the side with the blockage/ cyst. That pain is gone now and I feel fine so hopeful it is smaller.
So aparently the radiologist wants to do a ultrsound and MRI on the same day. He wants to do his own as he feels he knows what he is looking for. Like the one doing fertility issues had not done the job properly.
Part of me says this is the private hospital making extra money on my insurance but I prefer to get a better look as the National Health Service here would probably go straight to lap and dye.
I really apreciate you advice Will keep you all updated

Re: Ovarian cyst- CTscan AND MRI???

I've been down this road before, too.

To confirm my ventral (incisional) hernia that I incurred following my third c section (July of '03), my ct scan, which took place 12/17/05, showed the hernia but also picked up a cyst on my left ovary. The ct scan 'showed' a dermoid, but my new OB ordered an ultrasound, and the tests went hand in hand with each other. The cyst was a true dermoid (these usually have to be surgically emoved), and the guy saved my left ovary because there was healthy tissue involved.

Good luck!

P.S. No MRI was ordered to look at my cyst.

A transvaginal ultrasound should definitely pick up a cyst on one's ovary if the abdominal ultrasound isn't 'seeing' it.

Re: Ovarian cyst- CTscan AND MRI???

Well had my MRI and ultra sound yesterday. Turns out the ultrasound was actually to check two spots on my liver that showed up on the CT scan. Turns out they are just moles on my liver which he says are nothing to worry about.
As for the MRI for what they thought was ovarian cysts turns out it was fibroids they saw on my CT scan. They said it was at the very bottom of the CT can so they could see well which is why they wanted the MRI.
So now I wait to see my fertility specialist to discuss my fibroids. Hope nothing else shows up on the MRI as I am ready to be healthy again!
