    missed period caused by meds?

    hi everyone,
i wasnt sure what board to post this on, but ive missed a period and am wondering if it could be caused by the meds that im taking (im on lithium for bipolar disorder). Ive had disruptions to my cycle before when i used to take anti depressants- i was sometimes a few days early or late, but had never completely missed a period before. The strange thing is, i always get a lot of PMS symptoms, including very bad breast pain, for at least a week before my period, but have had nothing like that either. It just feels like my body isnt going to have a period atall!
ive looked up lithium side effects but it doesnt list hormonal disturbances anywhere as one of them. ive been on it 2 months now and my period was completely normal and regular last month, but my dosage has been increased since then.
im pretty sure im not pregnant as i think i had sex last right after my period, it may have even been before my last period (my memory is awful at the moment). ive also been trying to conceive unsuccessfully for a while and tests showed im not ovulating.
has anyone else experienced anything like this due to meds? im just concerned as i have never missed a period before
    thanks in advance

I would get your thyroid checked.

    Re: missed period...

    Hi there,

Your period may not of arrived for many different reasons hun. Not only because of pregnancy. But I would do a test to rule out pregnancy. This is incase you conceived a few days before your last period as in this case, your period can arrive and be normal flow for you.

So definitely do a test to rule out pregnancy. Thats the first step. If its positive, see your doctor for confirmation and if it is negative, then see your doctor about your missed period.

Missed periods can be caused by stress, illness, medication your on, suddenly becomming irregular or due to hormonal imbalance. Even family problems can cause missed periods. So dont be alarmed as it may be a one off but do a HPT and see your doctor to rule out any underlying medical cause.

    Take care.

You could ask your pharmacist if this is a side effect from your medication. You could also buy a home pregnancy test and see if you are pregnant.
